What does everyday work look like?

If you have successfully trained as a chiropractor, you usually offer your services in your own practice. In the following you will learn an example of how your working day could go:

8:00 a.m.

Some patients are already sitting in your waiting room when you enter the practice through the main entrance. After greeting your secretary, you go straight to your treatment room. Ms. painter suffers from insomnia and irregular attacks of dizziness. You will find the trigger for this in several displaced cervical vertebrae, which you can feel and move to their original position with quick pressure movements.

9:10 am

Mr. Marquard comes in to you, bent slightly forward. He complains of tension in his lower back, which restricts his mobility and causes pain. You ask him to lie down on his side and bend his arms and legs at a certain angle. While Mr. Marquard exhales, you release the blockage with short, powerful pushes.

10:25 am

Next, Mr. Kohlmann seeks you, who the day before had a strong cramp in his neck muscles. In addition, his left eye is very red and watery. After a thorough examination from the feet to the head, you put your hand on his cervical vertebrae in order to straighten the upper two with one jerk. The trapped nerve tracts are exposed again and Mr. Kohlmann can feel the pressure on the left side of his face slowly easing.

11:10 a.m.

Strong, recurring headaches have plagued Ms. Steffens for days. On the treatment couch, you give light impulses with your hands to different parts of your head in order to balance the tension in the meninges.

12:15 p.m.

No appointments are scheduled for the next two hours. Now you have time for a snack. You will also discuss some organizational tasks with your assistant.

2:15 p.m.

In the afternoon you also examine patients with very different symptoms such as heart problems, hip pain or high blood pressure. You patiently feel the cervical vertebrae in the neck and the spine until you notice irregularities that could be the cause of the problems.

For today you have taken care of all those in need. You clear away some documents, turn off the light in the premises and leave your practice.

What does a chiropractor do?

When you see a new patient in your practice, you not only discuss their current complaints with them, but also find out about their previous medical history. This will give you a more accurate picture of the disease in question and will also allow you to better assess whether chiropractic treatment can help with the particular problem or whether it may be harmful instead. In the case of particularly drastic displacements of the vertebral bodies, broken bones or age-related ailments such as osteoarthritis, you are not allowed to treat. In addition, if you have infections or herniated discs, you use other methods to relieve pain and promote healing. If necessary, you can use neurological and orthopedic tests to gain further clarity about the state of health of the person in need.
As a chiropractor, your main focus is on the human spine, pelvis and skull. Due to an incorrect sitting posture, stress, wear and tear or an accident, the vertebrae move out of their original position and pinch nerve tracts. The flow of information to the brain stalls and various functional disorders occur in different areas of the body. For example, your patients complain of migraines, back pain, dizziness or visual disturbances. With your hands you feel the cervical vertebrae and the further course of the spine in order to determine displacements and overstretching. You also check whether the pelvis is straight and the patient's legs are of the same length. Your examination is always aimed at finding the cause of the problem and not just treating the symptoms. In order to correct misalignments and to bring bones, joints and muscles into position, you exert pressure with specific grips or use certain lever or rotary movements. Depending on the problem, you bump suddenly, which sometimes makes the joints pop loudly. In the same way, you also give gentle impulses, for example in the face, when the skull bones work unfavorably against each other. In sensitive regions you use what is known as an activator, which emits a short, light pressure surge on a point on the body.
As a rule, you work as a chiropractor in your own practice. In addition to your professional activity, you will also face many other organizational and administrative tasks. For example, you do the bookkeeping, submit tax returns and take care of appointments for patients. In addition, you will document your findings during an examination and create invoices based on the services provided, which you will send to those treated. Since some statutory health insurances take over the costs partially or completely, you also demand the corresponding consideration for your services from them. Depending on how well your practice is going, you will find help for reception to relieve yourself here and in some other areas.

What are the job prospects?

More and more people are interested in alternative, gentle healing methods apart from conventional medicine, since the focus here is not only on physical symptoms, but also on deeper causes and the person as a whole. The aging of society also plays its part in increasing the need for chiropractors. However, since the job title is not protected in Germany, the competition is correspondingly fierce. Because basically every doctor and alternative practitioner with a healing permit can use the methods of chiropractic, regardless of how long and extensive their training was.

What specializations are there?

Sports chiropractic is now ubiquitous in international competitive and professional sports. If you get into this area as a specialist, athletes from various disciplines will ask for your help. You are pursuing two main goals. On the one hand, they want you to make them even more efficient and so they can access the full potential of their body. On the other hand, it is important for every professional athlete to prevent injuries or at least alleviate their severity through chiropractic measures. Accordingly, you not only treat damage suffered, but also think about how a healthy body can achieve optimal mobility and performance.
As a child chiropractor, parents come to you with their children who report symptoms such as digestive problems, restlessness or one-sided head posture. Usually this leads to the children screaming intensely over a longer period of time. Be particularly careful when treating adolescents, as they do not lie still for long periods of time and cannot adequately articulate their problems. Often the impairments stem from pregnancy and, above all, the birth process. In addition, you examine kindergarten and school children, because they sometimes experience poor posture and other related problems, as the bodies of the little ones are overwhelmed by growth spurts.

  • No protected job title in Germany
  • Most of the chiropractic studies abroad are possible
  • Healing permit from a doctor or alternative practitioner required

Did you already know, that ...

  • ... the term chiropractic comes from the Greek and translates as “treat by hand”?
  • … Joints sometimes crack when moving because gas escapes from the fluid-filled joint capsule?
  • ... the intervertebral discs lose fluid during physical activity and soak up like a sponge when lying down, especially at night when you sleep?
