Naiman writes, "Many of the health risks associated with sleep deprivation result from a silent epidemic of REM sleep deprivation."

REM sleep deprivation can also cause difficulties in solving complex and new tasks, which can pose problems in everyday life, especially for older people. Body prioritizes non-rem sleep

Since the body prefers the non-REM sleep, which it needs to survive, the REM sleep phase is the first to be omitted if there is a lack of sleep. And as people sleep less and less because they are woken up by vibrating smartphones, street noise or ringing alarm clocks, the REM phase is interrupted more and more frequently.

The good news, however, is that this REM sleep deprivation is often self-induced. In order to minimize these health risks, it is often enough to switch off the smartphone or to set it to silent during sleep. Alcohol consumption can also cause sleep problems.
