Which is soundproof drywall or plywood
How to soundproof the interior walls. Soundproofing a drywall partitioning soundproofing for partition walls
Do-it-yourself soundproofing in panel structures and in a wooden house with thin walls is of paramount importance, in addition to insulating and installing new pipes. However, the situations are different: either you cannot fully deploy in a small area, then the budget is limited. Consider all options.
Comprehensive sound insulation not only requires money, but also sufficient space in the interior. Constructing drywall structures filled with cotton materials is certainly one of the best soundproofing options, but the thickness of such a solution can significantly reduce your living space.
In such cases, soundproofing the walls can be done using materials. It seems how can a thin layer of something hinder the propagation of sound waves? However, modern materials that combine the properties of minerals and polymers can achieve a significant effect even with a thickness of 3 mm. We're talking about what's called charged vinyl, better known as a noise block.
With its small thickness, the material is quite heavy - 5 kg per square meter. And as we know, the soundproofing index depends directly on the mass of the layer. Elasticity, moisture resistance and flexibility ensure a vinyl film that is produced with the addition of mineral dust - precisely this component and sound-insulating properties.
Charged vinyl prevents the propagation of noise with a force of 25 dB. If you double the material thickness, the sound insulation increases to 32 dB. However, please note - no material is able to produce high-quality sound insulation in proud solitude. This is the nature of sound - when it goes through layered structures it quickly loses its strength.
You can attach charged vinyl to the walls in a number of ways: carnations, staplers, and at the very least, pins. But the most reliable is to glue the material to the wall. It is best to use quick drying glue that can hold a lot of weight.
In addition to the sound block, you can add panels or cork sheets. This natural material has a unique porous and at the same time very dense structure. In addition to the soundproofing index, the cork has a noise absorption coefficient of up to 0.3 in the range from 0 to 1. Like vinyl, the cork itself will not achieve the desired effect, but in combination with other materials, silence in the room will be possible. It is best if there is at least a small millimeter of air between the vinyl membrane and the cork - this is very important with soundproof structures.
The life of a large family is certainly filled with much ado of their own authorship. But there come moments when every family member quietly wants to retire - someone to work, someone to study, and someone just alone. In this case, the interior noise protection must be fitted. You should start with small jobs: kit tears and cracks, insulate the hole for the socket, make the door trim. Perhaps after doing this work, you will not have to deal with walls at all - nevertheless, even the thickness of the partition in the half stone will reduce the noise to 45 dB, and this is the volume of a normal conversation.
The child's crying will overcome such an inner wall on two accounts. So, if several generations coexist in the apartment, it is best to spend money on this repair point. If the area permits, extensive soundproofing and sound absorption work should be carried out on at least one side of the wall - In this case, the next room is also quiet. If the minimum dimensions of materials are still important to you, it is best to place cork wood panels or cork wallpaper in a room where noise is frequent. One of the properties of a cork is to suppress sound waves from the side of the noise source.
A comprehensive solution can be sound insulation of the walls, in which ZIPS panels are placed under the wallpaper. ZIPS is a soundproofing panel system consisting of two-layer sandwich panels with a total thickness of up to 70 mm and a top layer of 12-13 mm. “Sandwiches” contain basalt fibers inside, which, in combination with hard HVL, enable you to drown out noises of up to 20 dB - that is, in combination with the partition's soundproofing index, almost all household noises. The solution is practical for high-speed panel assembly.
Installation begins with preparing the base. Old wallpaper should be removed, pulled out, or hammered into all of the cloves. Then on the wall with sealant Vibrosil Vibration isolation tape ( Vibrostek, Texaund) The lining of the double layer of tape should also be glued from the ends: under the ceiling, the floor, from the side of the side walls. This is a very important requirement for high quality insulation - the tape prevents the spread of bumps and structural noise.
Each ZIPS panel has several (4 to 8) vibration nodes via which the panels are to be mounted on the wall. Installation begins from the bottom up - the product is attached to the wall, and through vibration nodes holes up to 6 cm deep are drilled, into which plastic dowels are inserted, and screws and washers are screwed. Dowels should be driven into the hole as deep as possible. The screw head should be recessed 2 mm into the surface of the plate. The sandwich panels are connected to one another via a tongue and groove connection and can also be attached with self-tapping screws. If necessary, the panel is cut with a jigsaw or hacksaw with a small tooth, a layer of cotton is cut with scissors.
The cheapest and most effective way to get rid of noise in a wood is to do a series of soundproofing work on the floor, ceiling and walls, not to mention small details like pipes, cracks and sleeves. Although it's small, you should start with. In particular, in prefabricated houses, sockets can be inserted into through holes in the wall, through which you can perfectly hear even the usual conversation of the neighbors.
Problematic plinths should be disassembled and pushed into the hole with mineral wool or cut out of the plate, depending on the diameter of the hole, the washer that will be inserted under the plinth. For a better effect, the puck should also be putted. However, when the neighbors are very noisy, it is sometimes better to remove the sockets from the wall next to their apartment.
Heating and water pipes can serve as excellent transmitters of sound vibrations if they did not take care to lay at least one layer of vibration isolation during their installation.
This is exactly what happens in most panel houses. Hence, you need to correct this error. The best way is to hammer the plaster and concrete around the pipe at least a few inches and fill the space with acoustic sealant. As a quick but less effective solution, simply place a sheet wrapped in a layer of vibration isolation from the side of the wall under the pipe.
The standard soundproofing structure looks like this: a plasterboard box is stuffed on the walls and ceiling, the space between the box is filled with a layer of 5-10 cm of mineral wool covered with drywall. It is important to strictly fix the elements of the box by a vibration isolation layer and to leave a small space at the ends so that the box does not adjoin the side walls. This thickness of the soundproofing of the walls blocks almost all noise.
Floating bottom - the fastest and most effective way out with noisy neighbors from below. The bars are placed on a flat surface (through a layer of vibration isolation!) That are not attached and do not touch the walls from the end. The rods can be placed on a glass wool mat for an added effect, but in either case the space between them is filled with basalt wool. Two-layer GVL panels are then attached to the crate, and you can already apply the top coat on top.
Laying brick walls is not only associated with significant loads on the floors, but also involves considerable time costs and requires specialist knowledge.
If you want to create, you can create an imitation of a brick niche by finishing the block or frame construction with brick tile. Corner elements made of artificial stone create a complete illusion of the thickness of the masonry or natural stone.
Suitable for structures with a density of 600-800 kg / m³, a thickness of 80-100 mm. The smaller thickness is insufficient in terms of sound insulation and boom strength. However, the walls of the foam blocks need to be plastered. Because of this, it will be difficult to create a small decorative niche, since you will have to cut blocks and plaster the surface.
Partitions made of Ceramsit concrete are moisture-proof and durable, but they do not differ in the stability of the geometric dimensions. Such masonry is carried out only by professionals, and in any case it is necessary to level the surfaces with rather thick layers of stucco.
Made of tongue and groove plasterboard
Plaster of paris tongue and groove sheets are larger than foam blocks, but you can use them to create decorative niches. Thanks to the groove-comb connection, the structures are stable. You don't need any reinforcement, just anchor to the walls and reinforce the corners with plaster corners made of galvanized steel. The disadvantage of the material is that it is difficult to saw. Therefore, during assembly, it is necessary to remove grooves and burrs, and then reinforce the masonry with reinforcing rods or plates. But the walls made of foam blocks let steam through, that is, breathe. In addition, gypsum contains water and acts as a regulator of the humidity regime in rooms with normal humidity.
Tongue and groove plasterboard weighs significantly more than concrete blocks and is therefore only suitable for houses whose floors are designed for a distributed load of more than 800 kg / m2.
Another disadvantage is the high elasticity. This creates a drum effect - a relatively low level of sound insulation at frequencies of 100-200 Hz.
Partitions with a pocket for a sliding door are usually made of drywall. It can be based on a factory case from profiles of a special section. The design offers the option to adjust the height of the blade.
Porous ceramic blocks are 2–2.5 times lighter than bricks and at the same time hold the fasteners well. If you use chemical anchors, wall installations can even be mounted on a 130 mm thick wall.
The large format of the blocks accelerates the masonry, grooves and ridges on the lateral ends reinforce the partition wall and the ribbed surface ensures reliable adhesion to the plaster layer.
The disadvantages of porous blocks include relatively high water absorption. This problem can be solved with the help of waterproofing primer and cement plaster.
It practically does not burden the ground, does not require laborious work and allows for the trouble-free laying of wires and pipes.
In recent years, instead of the usual fastening with self-tapping screws, notches are used more often: a hole with curved edges in two contact walls of the profiles is made with a special tool that resembles ticks. Fastening through a notch speeds up installation, in addition, there are no protruding screw caps on the frame, and a sheet of drywall lies perfectly evenly on top of it. But when fastening with a notch, it is more difficult to correct errors, in addition, it is less durable, so it is important to observe the required pitch of the self-tapping screws - 250 mm.
Restructuring Legal Memo
With housing inspection authorities. If the design calculation shows an increase in the load on the floor, it is difficult to obtain a permit, as a technical conclusion from the house planner is required.
- Refurbishment, which affects the load-bearing walls or the unloading of non-load-bearing partitions, can only begin after approval by the housing inspection.
- When re-planning, it is impossible to increase the load on the ceilings beyond the allowable project (calculation of load-bearing capacity, deformation).
- It is difficult to agree on replacing a partition with a heavier one.
- They do not allow renovations where your bathroom is above the kitchen or the living room of the apartment below. This rule also applies to the arrangement of apartments in monolithic new buildings, in which new walls of wetlands are erected according to the floor plan.
This will avoid installation errors
A common mistake when installing interior partitions is the wrong location. The owner of the apartment can misjudge the dimensions of the room (for example, a dressing room), the architect - not understand the wishes of the customer, the foreman - misread the plan, the workers - see the "wrong label". The wall needs to be dismantled and rebuilt, time is wasted and costs rise. It is therefore very desirable that the landlord and the architect (designer) come to the property with a plan and a tape measure in order to control the laying of the first rows.

It is very important to have the partition walls soundproofed correctly, as they are much thinner than the load-bearing walls and how people feel in the room depends on them.
The function of the partition is to divide the space into different parts. The use of this design may be required in any type of premises, both in residential buildings and in offices, in summer houses, etc.
Sound insulation consists of the following components: sound reflection, sound absorption, acoustic comfort. Each of them is important in its own way, and since at least one is missing, there is no point in talking about complete and comfortable soundproofing.
Some useful information:
Types of partitions
The partitions themselves are multilayered and single-tiered.
Single-tier partitions Create from self-supporting material. Such a material is very dense and contains a hard binder. For example, plaster of paris, brick, reinforced concrete. In these constructions, sound insulation is achieved due to the thickness and weight. The main disadvantage of such partitions is the great thickness, which "eats" the room.
Multi-tier or frame partitions - This is a system made up of several layers of different materials. It is important that the materials have different densities, both hard and soft materials are included. In this construction, hard layers are often used - spinning top or brick as a base, and soft (mdp) as a sound absorber. Due to the specific structure of light materials, the sound vibrations passing through them become weaker due to the air friction in the pores.
It is important to take into account that layers such as cork, polystyrene foam and polyurethane foam are not suitable for soundproof structures. The thing is the lack of density and the lack of ability to let air through yourself.
Soundproofing of different types of partitions is done in different ways. With a single-layer wall due to an initially thick wall, the fineness and efficiency of the materials are important, and with a multi-layer wall, the right “cake” and the ratio of density to mass are important.
A quick option is a method that used to be very popular - hanging a rug on the wall. The soft layer and thick, dense pile perfectly muffled sounds from neighboring rooms.
The article describes soundproof structures made of the following materials:
Or, more precisely, drywall - plasterboard, which is sheathed with construction panels. There are different types of Hyproc, standard sheets, reinforced and particularly flexible, are best suited for partition walls.
Soft fiberboard made from compressed conifer shavings. The range includes heat and sound insulating panels (especially for indoor use), windproof and universal (with a thorn-groove bracket that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use).
Mineral wool, flax insulation. Such materials, in addition to their main function, have excellent sound absorption properties. They have many interwoven fibers in their structure through which air can flow. A plus is also a sufficient thickness.
Decorative decoration for walls and ceilings based on Isoplat thermal and sound insulation panels. In fact, this is the stove itself, pasted over with washable wallpaper or fabric. It has a tongue and groove connection for easy installation and excellent acoustic properties.
Sound insulation of a single-layer partition
Basically, the soundproofing of such walls directly depends on how much space you want to sacrifice. Since such structures already have a large mass and thickness, it is recommended to use thin soundproof panels for reasons of space. Do you remember the carpet on the wall. Of course, nobody is going to use this method right now, but it is not necessary. The Izotex and Isoplat product lines have exactly the same properties.
Option 1 - Isotex
This is the easiest way to soundproof. The partition wall is lined with Izotex decorative panels on both sides. The panels are only 12 mm thick, while the sound insulation coefficient of the airborne sound is 23 dB. Fine sound insulation with a finish is simply not to be found. With Isotex, most of the acoustic energy can be converted into heat, the rest is reflected. You can also use these panels to adjust the acoustics in the room.
Option 2 - Isoplat and Isotex
This method includes the installation of thermal and sound insulation panels, as well as decorative cladding over them. At the same time, the thickness of the soundproofing layer can be adjusted. Isoplat panels are produced with a thickness of 10 mm, 12 mm and 25 mm. So you can easily choose the thickness you want. Izotex panels can be easily attached to thermal and sound insulation panels. The installation of all materials can be carried out independently without any problems.
Sound insulation of a multilayer partition wall
A soundproof "cake" can be constructed in different ways, using the frame or, for example, a tongue and groove plate (from 80 mm) as a base. In any case, the effectiveness also depends on the thickness of the materials, their mass and filling.
Option 1 - neighborhood
When using a tongue and groove plate between the partition and the supporting wall, an elastic abutment is installed - the Isoplat heat and sound insulation board. This method increases the sound insulation coefficient Rw of the entire structure to 41 dB.
Option 2 - stove, isoplat and hyproc
The basis in this design is again the tongue and groove plate. First mdvp Isoplat is installed on two sides and a gyro above it. In this case the gyro takes on the function of sound reflection and Isoplat sound absorption. For the best effect, install several Isoplat plates in front of the top.
Option 3 - giprok, isoplat and insulation
In order to be able to use this option, you must install a frame in which there is a heater (linen or at least cotton wool). At the same time, the insulation should be as natural and "breathable" as possible, as the other simply does not let air through and therefore absorbs sound waves in a high-quality way. Next, the insulation is closed with an Isoplat plate and then with a Hydrocom. Despite the fact that this design has a low overall weight, thick, high-quality insulation has good soundproofing properties and does not allow noise to enter the next room.
Izotex decorative panels can also be installed on any of the above sound insulation schemes of a multilayer construction. They will not be superfluous, as in any case the Gypro will have to be decorated and the panels will provide acoustic comfort. As a result, you will have a warm partition that will protect you from third-party sounds.
Soundproof partitions work in the same way as soundproof walls. The only difference is that the soundproofing has to be done on both sides. The basis of the partition - the metal frame is inevitably glued with a damper tape. Then the frame is filled with basalt or polyester wool and coated. All joints are coated with soundproofing agent. The only difference to the soundproofing of the wall is the lack of vibration suspensions. Instead, they use SoundGuard Vibro Washer, a special vibration-free washer, to secure the frame to the floors.

Soundproofing interior partitions is not as common a task as e.g. B. Soundproof walls. However, if you neglect them, then in the future you may find that even a TV working in the next room will disturb the rest. In addition, the use of soundproofing materials is justified not only by creating acoustic comfort in the room. Another important point is the thickness of the partition to be built. Fewer people want to lose a large amount of usable space, make thick partitions from brick or aerated concrete, and use a frame and drywall for these purposes. Since there is practically no soundproofing in such structures, it is important to choose the right materials that will delay the noise and not increase the thickness of the drywall.
In modern homes and offices, they often use internal partitions to demarcate the space. In order to save space, time and building materials, frame walls were mostly made of drywall, plywood and chipboard. Sometimes, when building partitions, not enough attention is paid to soundproofing. If high-quality sound insulation is not required for office and industrial premises, then this problem is extremely relevant for living spaces.
Sound-insulating interior partitions of various types.
For a comfortable stay in the apartment, care should be taken to reduce the sound permeability between neighboring rooms. Then music, the sound of water or the crying of a child will not penetrate the internal partitions. Consider different soundproofing methods:
- The "grandfather" method was tested by our parents. The bottom line is that if you hang a rug on the wall or put a wall on it, the noise from the next room will be quieter immediately. The ability of soft carpet fibers to absorb sound and acoustic vibrations has been proven in scientific studies.
- Gluing or sheathing the walls with soundproofing or soundproofing materials. This method is used when the internal partitions are made of durable materials - aerated concrete, brick, blown concrete blocks. Various substrates for wallpaper, roll materials made of PVC, PET or rubber and a large number of membranes are used as sound insulation. The best option for such soundproofing is the SoundGuard Carpet soundproof mat, which can be used on any surface.
- Soundproofing drywall partitions is one of the most popular in the construction market. In and of themselves, frame structures made of metal profiles covered with drywall are very echo-like. Not only do they miss acoustic and vibratory noises, they can even amplify them. Basalt wadding, polystyrene foam, polyurethane foam and other sound-absorbing materials can be used to soundproof such partition walls.

The purpose of the internal partitions is to divide the interior of the house into several separate rooms. They are made from a variety of heavy and light materials. The level of noise in the house largely depends on the type of material used and the design features of the partition.
Solid partition walls perfectly fulfill the task of soundproofing. In order to achieve the required degree of "silence" when installing lightweight structures, sound-absorbing material is placed between the cladding.
Various sources generate noise: the household comes from a functioning television and human voices, the low frequency comes from functioning technical devices, for example ventilation. A special index for airborne sound insulation has been developed, the minimum value of which for internal partition walls is 45 dB.
If we compare a heavy partition and a light frame structure, a massive partition with the same index reflects low frequency sounds better. Acoustics is a complex science and only a specialist can achieve perfect sound absorption. It goes without saying, however, that any hole in the partition, for example cracks on the periphery of the door frame, significantly affects the sound insulation.
Which designs can keep their level within acceptable limits? Volume partition walls made of porous materials: aerated concrete, ceramics are equipped with high sound-reflecting and sound-absorbing properties. With a partition wall thickness of 10 cm, the noise absorption index is 40 dB at 15 cm - 50 dB. If additional measures are required, you can leave a layer of air between the two rows of masonry or finish the wall with drywall. The sound absorption improves the double layer of the jacket material significantly
With the help of multi-layer partition walls, excellent soundproofing can be achieved: In these, the sound is reflected by the rigid outer walls of the drywall and absorbed by the inner soft layer of the basalt fiber-based panels. The stiffer the outer cladding, the better the soundproofing, so you can do it in two layers. The advantage of a narrow multilayer partition over a monolithic one is that it saves usable space.
Types of soundproofing materials
Some materials can reflect sound while others absorb it. The first group includes solid materials: concrete, metal, brick, drywall. The second - materials with a fibrous structure or in the form of grains and cells. They are made on the basis of mineral or glass wool in the form of plates and rolls.
The use of sound-absorbing membrane materials gives the best result, but their distribution is limited by the high price. It is very convenient to work with because the small thickness makes it easy to stick.

To lay soundproof materials, you need a frame. If you use an aluminum profile, it will also transmit extraneous noise. That is why they placed a special strip seal made of polyurethane under the frame. Profiles with dowels at a distance of 40 cm are attached to the ceiling, floor and walls. Features of the organization of sound insulation for different partitions
Next, add a layer or two of drywall to one of the sides. Soundproofing mats are cut to size and inserted into the empty space of the partition wall. If necessary - place within the communication and do final theses. All places where the frame is attached to rigid structures are insulated with elastic seals.
A wooden frame consists of beams that are placed between the frames of the plate made of sound-absorbing material and covered with plywood, lining or plasterboard. A two-layer cladding or a two-row frame with an air gap significantly increases the sound insulation index.
With the brick wall, it makes sense to carry out soundproofing measures with a thickness of 125 mm (half-brick). A hinged cladding of a metal frame is suitable here, which is covered with plasterboard in 1-2 layers from the side of the room. The gap between drywall and wall is laid with one of the sound-absorbing materials.
When removing small holes and cracks in the partitions, acrylic and silicone sealants get the best result, instead of installing foam: it has poor soundproofing properties. If you do these simple operations to avoid noise, the house will be much quieter and more comfortable.
