HDR

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and offers a larger dynamic range and color range than SDR (Standard Dynamic Range). The terms used for monitors and televisions differ somewhat here. However, the functionality can be seen as identical.

In the area of ​​monitors, VESA has specified three different DisplayHDR system services (DisplayHDR 400, DisplayHDR 600 and DisplayHDR 1000). The first version of the new specification, DisplayHDR version 1.0, focuses on liquid crystal displays (LCDs). More tiers are expected to be added later to support continued innovation and improvements in display performance.

DisplayHDR 400

DisplayHDR 400 is to be understood as an absolute entry-level. Monitors that are specified according to this standard must have real 8-bit picture quality, use global dimming for an improved dynamic contrast ratio and achieve a maximum brightness of 400 cd / m².

DisplayHDR 400 True Black

Specification for monitors with OLED or Micro LED technology, since significantly deeper black values ​​can be achieved here. The VESA prescribes a maximum black value of 0.0005 candela per square meter (cd / m²) for True Black. Otherwise the specifications of DisplayHDR 400 apply.

DisplayHDR 500

DisplayHDR 500 and DisplayHDR 600 are identical except for the brightness. Rumor has it that the level introduced later was created because the extremely narrow Ultrabooks had heat problems with the high brightness of 600 cd / m².

DisplayHDR 500 True Black

DisplayHDR 1000

For professional PC enthusiasts and monitors on which HDR content is created, DisplayHDR 1000 should be the right specification. Monitors that are specified according to this standard must offer 10-bit image processing, have a higher color space than DisplayHDR 400 (e.g. DCI-P3), provide local dimming and achieve a maximum brightness of 1000 cd / m².

TV

Three methods of displaying HDR video content compete for televisions. To play back HDR10 video, UHD televisions require HDMI 2.0a or DisplayPort 1.4 as an interface. With Dolby Vision, HDMI 1.4b is sufficient.

HDR10

HDR10 is an extension of the video level dynamics in the Rec. 2020 color space with a color depth of 10 bits. It is an open standard that is supported by a large number of manufacturers.

HDR10 +

HDR10 + or HDR10 Plus, was introduced by Samsung and Amazon Video in April 2017. Various manufacturers now support this standard (Panasonic, Warner Bros. or 20th Century Fox). The standard has established itself in particular because it is an open standard and does not require a license.

Dolby Vision

Dolby Vision supports a standardized process developed by you with up to 12 bit color information. This means that brightness information can be displayed with luminance levels of 10,000 cd / m². With Dolby Vision, for example, every television series from a manufacturer is precisely measured before mass production begins, and all relevant data is stored on a chip located in the TV set. This data is used as a basis for calculating the optimal display of the image, which is calculated using algorithms.

HLG

Hybrid Gamma Log (HLG) is a standard that was developed by the TV broadcasters BBC and NHK and offers the possibility of transmitting images in HDR quality via cable and satellite. This standard is particularly interesting for fans of TV programs because the HDR10, HDR10 + and Dolby versions are only available when images are streamed or are available on a data carrier.
