Is there a mandatory deadline within which customers must switch from Skype for Business Online to Microsoft Teams?

Yes. Skype for Business Online will be retired on July 31, 2021 and will no longer be accessible. We encourage Skype for Business Online customers to start using Microsoft Teams and planning their upgrades now in order to have enough time to upgrade before the recruitment date.

Will the Skype meeting be broadcast at the same time as your online Skype for Business?

Yes. Teams Live Events are the successor to Skype Meeting Broadcast.

How much time will it take to upgrade my organization to Microsoft Teams?

What should I do to prepare for the upgrade?

In addition to validating technical readiness, a successful upgrade also includes user acceptance and readiness. Even if you find that your organization is not ready to move to Teams, you can start the planning process today. My organization already runs Teams alongside Skype for Business. Can I just turn off Skype for Business?

No, you need to switch users to Teams only mode to complete the upgrade to Microsoft Teams. When your organization is ready to transition to Teams, take the time to educate users on what is going on. Give them some time to get used to teams. This ensures that the upgrade goes well for you and that the helpdesk is needed less often. Who can I contact if I have questions about the upgrade process?

If you have any questions related to your upgrade, speak to your current contact. This can be your assigned Microsoft account team, a Microsoft partner, or FastTrack. Alternatively, you can create a help ticket in the Microsoft Teams admin center by clicking the button Do you need help? to press.

Do I have to update all users in my tenant at the same time, or can I update selected users individually?

You can flexibly update the users, i.e. individual persons, user groups or the entire organization, according to your requirements. Clarify the best method for your organization by learning about the various coexistence and upgrade modes that you can enable.

What happens after users upgrade?

After upgrading users to Microsoft Teams (mode Teams only (Microsoft Teams only)):

  • Your Skype for Business client will be disabled from use as all chats and calls go to Teams. This client will continue to be used for previously scheduled Skype for Business meetings. When this desktop client is uninstalled, users will be redirected to access previously scheduled Skype for Business meetings through the Skype for Business web application.

  • Skype for Business meetings scheduled before the upgrade work as intended, but all new meetings are scheduled in Microsoft Teams. When users try to sign in to Skype for Business, the client notifies them that they have been upgraded to Microsoft Teams. On mobile devices, users must manually uninstall the Skype for Business client.

Can users still use Skype for Business after I enable upgrade notification in their client?

Yes, the upgrade notification simply notifies users that Skype for Business is being upgraded to Microsoft Teams and prompts them to start using Microsoft Teams from now on if they are not already. We recommend completing this notification with an information campaign (emails, FAQs, help desk preparation, posters / signage) to provide information on further organization-specific details, such as the upgrade schedule, user calls for action, access to training, etc. If you need templates for communication, download the Upgrade Success Kit.

What does this mean from a licensing perspective? How do customers pay for features like audio conferencing and team calling?

Microsoft Teams is available in Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites. Features that are now premium workloads in Skype for Business Online are also considered premium workloads in Teams. Existing licenses are transferred to Microsoft Teams. For example, if a customer purchased standalone audio conferencing or audio conferencing as part of E5 with Skype for Business, audio conferencing in its form today is also enabled in Microsoft Teams.

Is Microsoft planning upgrades that are supported by Microsoft?

With the launch of the Skype for Business Online service on July 31, 2021, Microsoft aims to help customers make a successful transition to Teams by providing guidance on upgrades, online workshops, and training for users and administrators.

Skype for Business Online customers can be scheduled for supported upgrades to Microsoft Teams. This program is designed to help customers with the technical elements of upgrading an online Skype for Business online tenant to Teams. Customers who are scheduled for supported upgrades will receive notifications 90 days prior to the upgrade in both the Teams admin center and the Microsoft 365 Message Center to allow time for technical and user readiness. What are the benefits of teams' back-end infrastructure?

Microsoft Teams was designed for the cloud. A highly scalable microservice architecture is used, which offers efficient bandwidth utilization as well as more robust telemetry and enables maintenance and upgrades with minimal interruptions. This enables users to attend meetings faster and make better use of the application in the browser without having to download plug-ins. This modern infrastructure facilitates the use of Microsoft cognitive services such as transcription, translation, speech recognition and machine learning functions. This makes communication and collaboration easier and more effective.

Will you be supporting third-party development opportunities in Microsoft Teams?

Yes, app integration is one of the main benefits of implementing teams. We currently support third-party bots, connectors, and extensions in Microsoft Teams. In addition, an extensive ecosystem of add-ins is available in the Microsoft Teams app store.

Is Teams available in Microsoft 365 Education?

Teams is available in all Microsoft 365 Education Suite licenses (Microsoft A1, A3 and A5).

Is Microsoft Teams available in the Government Community Cloud (GCC)?

What is Microsoft's online speech capabilities plan?

The heart of our voice solution is the telephone system available today. Customers can also add a Microsoft Calling Plan that provides full calling support, including number acquisition and mapping, right within Microsoft 365. Customers who wish to keep their telecommunications / telephone connections can use the direct routing provided as part of the telephone system. You can combine both solutions and adapt them to the requirements of your organization for a comprehensive language solution.

What advice do you give to customers who have already deployed the phone system (cloud PBX) in Skype for Business Online?

Calls in Microsoft Teams are ready for all of your communication needs. We encourage all Microsoft 365 customers to get started with Teams as soon as possible. Using Teams helps you ensure that all critical workloads are online before Teams discontinue the online service enabled Skype for Business.

What are the guidelines for customers who are using Enterprise Voice today and are moving to Microsoft Teams and want to use the calling features?

Customers who want to integrate their own telephone service into Microsoft Teams now have the option of using the generally available direct routing function. Direct routing and calling plans are two options for tone dialing in Microsoft Teams.

Is the availability of audio conferencing in Microsoft Teams different from the availability in Skype for Business?

There are no changes to the availability of audio conferencing due to the availability in Microsoft Teams. Today's availability in more than 90 countries / regions and more than 400 cities is retained in both products. Are third-party audio conferencing providers supported in Microsoft Teams?

There are currently no plans to support third-party audio conferencing providers in Microsoft Teams. We believe that customers can best enjoy audio conferencing in Microsoft Teams and Skype for Business through our audio conferencing services. Customers who want audio conferencing provider support in Skype for Business meetings can still use their Skype for Business client to join Skype for Business meetings. Meetings scheduled in Microsoft Teams must use Microsoft 365 audio conferencing services. Support for the integration of external audio conferencing providers (ACP) in Skype for Business Online has been extended to July 31, 2021 to give additional time for the transition, but with limited support for the remaining active tenants. This is an update of the ACP timeline announced in April 2018.

What is the plan for supporting video interoperability in Microsoft Teams meetings?

Meeting room equipment is an integral part of our vision of a modern workplace. Cloud video interoperability services to support teams meetings with existing VTC systems are currently in the works. Deals from Pexip, Polycom and Blue Jeans will be generally available this fall.

Does the latest generation of Skype Room Systems (v2) support meeting in teams?

We renamed Skype Room Systems to Microsoft Teams rooms, which fully supports Microsoft Teams meetings and provides an easy migration path from Skype for Business to Teams by simply enabling Teams on the device. In addition to the ability for users to detect nearby Microsoft Teams rooms with proximity detection, Teams meetings can be connected with a single-click, dual-screen support and Microsoft Whiteboard, and we continue to provide innovative features such as a content camera with intelligent Recording available.
