Meaning in the job: If you want to inspire others, explain your WHY!

Inspiring people for ideas and thus getting into action.

Lately I've noticed two trends that at first glance have little to do with each other, but which are united by a large common core. The topic of developing mission and vision in companies and developing one's own personality as a person.

The search for meaning is also used in personal development. Everyone needs a purpose in life. For a company, the word sounds way too esoteric. But already successful entrepreneurs have consciously or unconsciously searched for it. You work with visions and align your thoughts and actions accordingly.

 

The pursuit of the "why"

Some people and companies manage to be significantly more innovative and successful than others and, objectively speaking, have the same opportunities. How come

At first glance, people like Martin Luther King Jr., founder and entrepreneur Steve Jobs and the Wright brothers have little in common. However, they all started with the “why”. Probably that natural ability was deep within them. She enabled them to inspire those around them and achieve remarkable things.

There is a well-known quote “If you know your 'why', it will come naturally.” (Unknown author). I didn't understand this quote for a long time until I stumbled upon a YouTube video by Simon Sinek.

Simon Sinek is a business consultant, military advisor, book author and motivational speaker and Sinek's first TEDx talk on "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" is the most watched TEDx video on TED.com. In total, this video has been viewed over 41 million times!

Sinek gets to the bottom of the "why". It explains very simply and incredibly plausibly why the WHY is so important to us humans. He explains this meaning with the "Golden Circle".

The golden circle contains three circles that go from the outside to the inside. The outer ring symbolizes the "What". The middle circle stands for the "How" and the inner circle stands for the "Why".

With the “why” I get on the track of my inner driving forces. She answers a piece of the "question of meaning". And everyone strives for it personally. And different.

Always communicate your "why" first

Sinek formulates his core idea as follows: “People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it. ”

That sounds pretty trivial. However, it is by no means. Most employees and companies are good at explaining what they are doing. By the way, that's the first thing they tell other people about. But very few can explain why they are doing something.

It is important for people to know why they are doing something. Because then we feel a sense of belonging and identify with the goal.

For example, Steve Jobs did a very good job with Apple. He has aligned all his communication with the WHY and then deduced the HOW until finally the WHAT remains.

So if you want to inspire other people, first tell them why you are doing things. And you will feel how people react positively to it and get involved.

 

The best companies are supported by enthusiastic employees

Take a look at Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon & Co. You can hardly save yourself from applicant inquiries. You inspire and at the same time require your employees to go beyond the company's success. You don't rely on employees looking for a big paycheck or a highly skilled worker. These companies are looking for people who are inspired for the same reasons and who are ready to make these visions a reality.

To illustrate this, Sinek asked the following question: Who would you rather let work for you? Excel pro Johnny, who is only here to collect his consultation fee, or Fritz, who needs some time to learn but wants to change the world like you do?

 

The golden circle

The "Golden Circle" consists of three circles. In the middle is the “why”, the core that forms the center. Around this core are the circles, the HOW and the WHAT.

If you want to convince and motivate people, you have to know the “golden circle” with its three levels.

We humans can do it WHAT describe very well. Whether as an entrepreneur, employee or as a person in a private environment. The WHAT simply describes what needs to be done. In the job there are checklists, project goals, the implementation of orders, etc.

The HOW shows us how we can achieve the WHAT. How are things going to be done? How is the project or the order implemented?

The WHY describes what the mission of a company or organization is. Or what purpose it has and for what purpose it was founded. What goal does the founder or private individual want to achieve, what drives people?

 

Practical tip

All three levels are important and should be thought through. However, in most cases, whether for companies or private individuals, the WHY is unclear. Example: Achieving profit maximization is not a WHY, it reflects the outcome of the WHAT and the HOW.

If you want to inspire and motivate people to take action, acquire the perspective of the golden circle and learn to understand these three levels.

In employee management, the golden circle is a basis for companies to build a strong organization in which people work enthusiastically on a vision. Companies should always communicate WHAT is being done and HOW - and also WHY.

And you can use this “golden circle” for yourself personally and it will simply take you a step further!
