Salary in social professions
How high your salary in a social profession will ultimately be depends on various factors. It also depends on whether you work in the public service, in social institutions or self-employed.
With higher qualifications, your salary can increase. For example, although you can start your professional life straight after your bachelor's degree with a social work degree, your opportunities for advancement and the possibilities for your salary development are usually a little better with a master’s degree. Often you can expect a higher starting salary. With further training and certificates, you can gain even more qualifications and thus have additional arguments in the salary negotiation.
Location can also have an impact on your salary. If you look at the average salaries in different industries sorted by federal state, there are often big differences. There can also be wage differences between different cities, as salaries in the private sector are in part also adjusted to the cost of living in the respective city.
Most of all, the amount of your salary depends on your employer. In the public service, social professions are usually better paid than, for example, in NGOs that work on a very tight budget. The size of your employer also affects your chances of advancement. In larger companies you usually have more options, as more positions have to be filled.
Next to the employer, the position has the greatest influence on your salary. If you take on more responsibility and are also responsible for other employees, you will of course earn more than if you are currently completing your recognition year and learning from the other employees. As a rule, you do not start in a managerial position immediately after graduation, but rather gain experience first.
Your work experience also has a significant impact on your salary. Of course, when you're just starting your first job, you haven't had as much experience as after ten years as a social worker. Extensive professional experience is very important, especially for managerial positions or positions in corporate social counseling. If you apply for these positions, a certain period of work experience in the respective area is usually required.
If you work in the public sector, where you are paid according to the tariff, your negotiating skills do not play a role in the salary. In the free economy you can of course get one or the other, not only monetary, advantage in the salary negotiation. You can reinforce your salary demands with qualifications or work experience, for example.
