Salary as a civil servant in the middle customs service

As a civil servant in the higher customs service, earnings are regulated nationwide. Instead of salary, we speak of salary. The level of salary depends on training, career, age and, in some cases, also on performance. The salary groups A 9 to A 13 are used in the upscale customs service.

Apprenticeship remuneration: A remuneration is already paid during the apprenticeship, the so-called candidate remuneration. As a prospective civil servant in the higher-level customs service, there are currently 1,223.38 euros gross per month (as of 2018). Training and dual studies as a civil servant in the middle customs service

In order to become a customs officer in the higher service, you must complete training. To be more precise, a dual course of study. It consists of several study phases at the Education and Science Center (BWZ) in Münster as well as several internships that take place at one of the 42 main training offices.

The customs training takes a total of three years. It concludes with a career test.

The course is divided into a basic and a main course. The basic course lasts six months and conveys a lot of basic knowledge from the areas of economics and finance, constitutional law, business administration, organization, information processing, pedagogy, psychology and sociology.

In addition, the legal basics of the customs service are taught and foreign language skills are imparted. At the end of the basic course there is an intermediate examination consisting of four written exams. The first internship is then completed.

The main focus of the main course is business administration, management theory, tax law, consumption tax law, traffic tax law, customs law and public administration accounting. In addition, two additional elective subjects can be taken, for example in the main areas of clearance (e.g. controls at the customs office), services (e.g. reimbursement and waiver of taxes and customs), e-government (electronic processing in public administration) or Control (e.g. financial control of undeclared work, customs investigation).

At the end of the dual study program, the so-called career test is due. It consists of an oral exam and six written exams. If the exam is passed, the academic degree of Diplom-Finanzwirt / in (FH) can be used.

The work in the customs service can begin. The civil servant relationship is initially on a trial basis. If you prove yourself, the civil servant relationship will be extended for life.

Overall, graduates report that the dual study program is well prepared to work as a customs officer. It is specifically designed to convey the application of the respective laws. The lectures are school-like and focused. However, there is not much free time left for a typical student life.

A dual course of study in the higher-level customs service is in great demand and makes certain demands, so the recruitment tests are more demanding than in the medium-sized customs service. For customs training in the senior service, you should have at least a technical college entrance qualification or an educational qualification recognized as equivalent. The Abitur is of course also possible.

Future customs officers can either have German citizenship or the citizenship of another EU member state, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway. What is important is the commitment to stand up for the free democratic basic order within the meaning of the German Basic Law at all times.

You should also be clear about whether you are ready to wear a uniform and a weapon and work in shifts. In addition, you should not have a criminal record and live in an orderly economic situation.

Application for the customs training in the higher service

The application as a civil servant in the senior customs service consists of a letter of application, a tabular curriculum vitae, certified copies of all school leaving certificates and examination certificates and the fully completed and signed Form 5330 (four-page application form).

The application can be submitted either by post or by email. Particular attention is paid to the grades in German and mathematics. Anyone who takes this first hurdle and wins them over with their application will receive a written invitation to the selection process.

The selection process consists of a four-hour written test in which, among other things, language and numerical comprehension and knowledge are tested. If the written examination is passed, an invitation to the oral selection procedure follows. You can put yourself and your skills to the test in group exercises (discussion, role play, short presentation) and in an individual interview.

You should not miss the application deadline for this, after this date you will not be able to apply for the coming year. The application period usually ends on September 30th of each year. As a rule, training begins on August 1st of the following year.
