Why am I afraid of cats
Cat phobia - The fear of cats
Perhaps some will now think: “Afraid of cats? That's ridiculous! ”But I wouldn't be so hasty! Every phobia is to be taken seriously, even if you are not affected yourself! Why? Because it is not funny for those affected and can have deep cuts in the quality of life. That's why I did a little research and collected information on this topic ...
Right at the beginning: Suffering from cat phobia is no shame! People with cat phobia already existed in antiquity, e.g. Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great; Even in subsequent epochs, people such as Napoleon suffered from it! You see, this fear existed long before us and it will continue to exist ...
But now back to the cat phobia itself, the scientific name of which is "ailurophobia". The fear is not only triggered by bad experiences (e.g. biting, scratching ...), it is often trained in a person already in childhood, through superstition and horror stories about cats. Since this is often done by people they trust, these stories are accepted by the children as an absolute fact and the breeding ground for a possible cat phobia is created.
How is this phobia expressed? Panic attacks can occur, but it doesn't have to be! There are different variants: The harmless way is that contact is simply avoided, such as touching cats or ignoring the presence of the cat ...
The extreme type of fear can become noticeable in that the person concerned quickly leaves the room or panics as soon as a cat enters it. Furthermore, that these people do not watch films, series, documentaries because there is a cat in them. The phobia shows even more extreme effects when those affected even carry pepper spray with them to defend themselves against possible attacks or use violence against the animals (this can of course also have other causes, as we know) ...
Further degrees of cat phobia can be that the person concerned is "only" afraid of black cats, white cats ... These forms are also quite common.
Can I recognize cat phobia in my fellow human beings? This is not so easy, because since the fear of cats is not so socially accepted, it is not easy for those affected to admit that they suffer from a cat phobia! Because the most frequently heard statements: “Don't act like that, it's just a cat!”, “Since when have men been afraid of cats?”; "Now don't be such a coward" are not helpful, on the contrary, they cause the person concerned to get even more fears, e.g. of social exclusion and then the vicious circle is already there!
This is another reason why people with a fear of cats are very creative in hiding their phobia! When asked about the pepper spray, the answer is that you have to protect yourself in times like these (e.g. from assaults, from dogs ...). Invitations are refused, with reasons such as "It's much more interesting in the coffee house"; “Come to me, I have a lot more space” “the cat could infect me with something” or used very often: “I'm allergic to cats”. If the person never wants to come to visit, you should perhaps ask as sensitively as possible whether it is the cat! If not, keep asking until you get a truthful answer; because in this case it is not easy for any of those affected if everyone feels rejected in one way or another ...
Is there any help? Yes, there is and it should be used, because phobias only go away on their own in rare cases! There is professional help with which one can get a better grip on the phobia with the help of techniques to cope with fear or the chances that one can live without fear are very good! This also increases the personal quality of life, because if I have overcome one fear, I can also do it in another fearful situation!
Finally, a few words on your own behalf: If you really suffer from your fear, you should seek help! You don't have to tell anyone about doing a seminar on fear management, you can say: "Today (or whenever the seminar is) I just want some time to myself to rest ..." BUT it would be nice an important first step to open up to someone you trust and to talk about the fear. Because often this first step is also the first step towards healing and increasing the quality of life! Furthermore, there are phobias about all sorts of things and whoever thinks he is immune could end up in situations where this arrogance is shaken. Because everyone is afraid of something, the trigger is just another ... A person who speaks about his phobia and stands by it is courageous and ready to fight the fear and will manage to lead a self-determined life. Because you should be able to determine your own life and not fear! This is not only true in terms of cat fear, but also in many other areas of life ...
