Holidays 2021 in Germany: Longer free due to bridging days

The German constitution clearly states: "Sunday and the nationally recognized public holidays remain legally protected as days of rest from work and spiritual exhilaration." Which public holidays there are in Germany is usually determined by the federal states. Only the day of German unity on October 3rd was set by the federal government.

The German Trade Union Federation (DGB) advises employees that there is a general ban on employment on public holidays - even if there are exceptions for rescue services, fire brigades or restaurants. A public holiday must basically be paid like a normal working day. That is only not the case if the work has been canceled anyway because of a strike, for example. A public holiday may not be counted as a vacation.

Christmas Eve is not a public holiday - just like New Year's Eve. According to the DGB, employees must take one day of vacation if they want to have days off. In many companies, however, there are other special rules.

The public holidays 2021 and 2022 can be used even better if vacation is taken on bridging days - i.e. on days that lie between a public holiday and the weekend. An example is Easter 2021: If you take four days of vacation from March 29 to April 1, you have a total of ten days off.

National holidays: meaning explained

What is the significance of the nine public holidays in Germany, which apply in all federal states? Here we explain.

New Year

Every year begins directly with a public holiday. On January 1st - the day after New Year's Eve - there is no work and no school. Incidentally, the beginning of the year was celebrated on different dates over the centuries, although there were also differences between the countries. In 1691, Pope Innocent XII set January 1st as the New Year. You can find out more here: New Year 2022: Why do you celebrate the New Year?

Good Friday

The second national public holiday in Germany is Good Friday every year. The date fluctuates, but is always between March 20th and April 23rd. This Christian holiday commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus. The term "Kar" goes back to the Old High German "Kara" or "Chara" and means mourning. Easter Monday

As early as 325 the Council of Nicaea decided that Easter should be celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon in spring. The number of days in Easter has changed over the centuries. Easter Monday, which is a public holiday in all of Germany, has kept. More details can be found here: When is Easter 2021? Dates for Easter holidays, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday.

Labor Day on May 1st

Many of the holidays in Germany have a Christian origin. May Day, on the other hand, dates back to a general strike in the United States in 1886. A few years later, people in Europe also began to celebrate Labor Day on May 1st. There are still major May rallies today. Most people tend to use the day for the opposite of work and enjoy their free time on trips, for example. You can read detailed background information on Labor Day here: Labor Day: Why is May 1st a public holiday?

Ascension of Christ

Ascension Day is also a public holiday in all federal states. The appointment is always the Thursday 39 days after Easter Sunday or the 40th day of Easter. On this day, Christians celebrate the return of Jesus to his Heavenly Father. But this is not only a special day for religious people: The same day is always Father's Day. You can find out more about Ascension Day here: Is Ascension Day 2021 a public holiday? Date and meaning.

Pentecost

Whit Sunday and Whit Monday take place 49 and 50 days after Easter respectively. The name "Pentecost" translated from Greek means "the 50th day". Christians celebrate that the Holy Spirit appeared to the disciples of Jesus. You can read more here: When is Pentecost 2021? The date and meaning of Whit Sunday and Whit Monday.

Day of German unity

German Unity Day is celebrated in Germany on October 3rd. The holiday dates back to October 3, 1990 and of course commemorates the reunification. You can find out more about the background to this day here: German Unity Day 2021: Why is October 3rd a public holiday?

1st Christmas Day

The birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated on December 25th. The date for Christmas Day probably goes back to pagan festivals from ancient Rome, which have been reinterpreted over time and increasingly replaced by Christian customs. 2nd Christmas Day

Why is there actually a 2nd Christmas holiday on December 26th after Christmas Day? That day is about the incarnation of God.
