Change eye color

"Your alternatives to the OR"

The color of our eyes is unique: As a visual fingerprint, it is created with all its nuances through a combination of pigments in the iris. But by no means all people are satisfied with their own color. We'll tell you how you can change the supposedly immovable eye color - and why certain methods are even extremely dangerous.

Changing Your Eyes Color: Another Beauty Trend?

Before the development of colored contact lenses, the different eye colors of people were considered largely unchangeable body features, which were used, among other things, for identification in official documents, birth certificates and personal descriptions. From a statistical point of view, pigmentation in the basic colors and mixed shades of blue, gray and green is rare: a large part of the global population sees the world through brown eyes. Especially among this majority, a dangerous beauty trend has developed: the surgical change of color through a tattoo of the iris or an implant.

These interventions are part of aesthetic surgery, their long-term effects have not been researched and can cause long-term health problems.

Iris tattoos and implants: cosmetic surgery in its infancy

With a so-called corneal tattoo to change the color of the eyes, the pigments of the cornea are manipulated using laser processes. To do this, a laser makes a microscopic incision into which a dye is then injected, which changes the original color of the eyes. In professional circles one speaks of a ring-shaped keratopigmentation. Despite the often unnatural looking results, this procedure is becoming more and more popular, especially for people with brown eyes who want a contrasting, light color. As with any operation on the organs of vision, complications can arise: In the case of the iris tattoo, especially inflammation and allergic reactions to the dye. If left untreated, there is a possibility of long-term damage to the cornea. In addition, there are no studies on long-term health consequences.

With the iris implant, in contrast to the use of tried and tested lenses for vision correction, the anterior chamber of the eye is implanted and not the posterior chamber. This allows you to change the eye color, but it also fixes the pupil: the iris can no longer adequately adjust to different light conditions. Often reduced night vision is the result. With an iris implantation, there may be risks such as increased sensitivity to light and a foreign body sensation, as well as special surgical-related complications: In contrast to the posterior chamber, there is simply not enough space in the anterior chamber to insert an implant. There is therefore a risk that the intraocular pressure will rise and develop glaucoma, which in turn needs immediate medical treatment. In extreme cases, there is a risk of vision loss.

Alternative to high-risk operations: change eye color with colored contact lenses

Even if risks and possible long-term health effects do not necessarily have to occur with the surgical interventions mentioned, leading ophthalmologists advise against these, since any damage to the natural iris is irreversible. It is not without reason that these operations are not permitted in Germany and must also be borne financially by the patient himself if he has to be treated here because of long-term effects. In addition, the decision for a desired color is quite final: at least with the corneal tattoo, the original eye color cannot be restored after it has been decided to change it.

Colored contact lenses have established themselves as a harmless alternative. Just like regular contact lenses, these are marked with a recommended wearing time, which should not be exceeded. If hygienic handling is also given and the eyes are checked regularly, they are considered to be harmless from a medical point of view. These colored lenses can be equipped with normal power and are available as daily lenses, but also as monthly lenses.

The material of the future: silicone hydrogel

The last revolution in visual aids are silicone hydrogel contact lenses - a new material that has a higher oxygen permeability than conventional contact lenses and even enables overnight wear without waking up the next day with an unpleasant foreign body sensation. So far, colored lenses have often not been able to keep up with this level of comfort.

Some manufacturers have now succeeded in combining the best properties of silicone hydrogel and colored lenses: The result means a color effect and comfort at the same time.

The Air Optix® Colors contact lens from Alcon / Ciba Vision is the first monthly lens made from this advanced material.

What makes the Air Optix® Colors so special?

To change the color of the eyes, these contact lenses from Alcon / Ciba Vision use what is known as "3-in-1 color technology": On the one hand, primary colors change your own eye color. In addition, the eye looks larger because the colored lens has a wider diameter than the iris. Integrated color pigments work for the better contrast ratio to define color depth and intensity. Finally, an outer ring outlines the clear lines of the visual organ.

Compared to conventional colored lenses, the Air Optix® Colors are more comfortable to wear: The lenses let through up to six times more oxygen than comparable products that are not made of silicone hydrogel. The Air Optix® Colors can be worn for days, weeks or months, provided the optician or ophthalmologist correctly adjusts it. Of course, you should also pay attention to sufficient hygiene here and use suitable care products regularly.

Gentle changes in color thanks to Freshlook Colorblends

Instead of a complete transformation, some contact lens wearers prefer to change their eye color naturally: The Freshlook Colorblends were designed precisely for this. Instead of an overlap, the lenses only change the accentuation of the iris structure. The change in color has the same effect on light and dark eyes and is more subtle. The colored lenses have a UV filter and can be worn for 4 weeks.

Optical illusion in our favor: Eye Care Long-Lash Mascara

If you don't necessarily want to change your own eye color, but just want to emphasize it, the women of creation in particular can quickly and easily reach into the bag of tricks. Eye Care Long-Lash Mascara, for example, visually elongates the eyelashes and provides an impressive volume, which inevitably draws the other person's gaze to your own eyes. Four colors help the dermatologically tested mascara, which is suitable for contact lens wearers, to emphasize the color of the eyes.

Change eye color - don't take any chances

Surgery to change eye color is not only very expensive but also extremely risky. If you still decide on a new look, then colored contact lenses are an excellent alternative. In addition, women use mascara that is friendly to contact lenses to set new accents and to emphasize their eyes in an appealing way. But there are also a few things to keep in mind when it comes to lenses. Therefore, you should definitely consult an optician or ophthalmologist beforehand to check your eyesight again and to clarify which models are suitable for you.
