Removing Smoke Smell - 7 Ways to Neutralize Nicotine Smell

The smell of smoke is often very persistent and difficult to remove from rooms or objects. We'll show you 7 ways to neutralize the unpleasant smell of nicotine.

Nicotine and smoke quickly settle on surfaces such as walls or furniture. Smoke odor becomes particularly persistent in textiles such as upholstery, curtains or clothing.

# 01 - prevent smoke odor

If you only smoke occasionally or as an exception in one place, there are a few things you can do as soon as the smell of smoke starts to develop in order to limit the effort involved in eliminating it. Open the windows while smoking and watch for a draft. After a party, you should also empty the ashtrays straight into the trash and take it outside too.

# 02 - Ventilate properly

Ventilation is still the best way to get rid of the smell of smoke. The rule here is: the earlier, the better and intermittent and cross ventilation is preferable to tilt ventilation. When ventilating, however, make sure that your apartment does not get too cold when the temperatures outside are very low, as the smell of cold smoke smells more unpleasant and is usually more difficult to remove. A first efficient action to remove fresh smoke odor from the apartment is cross-ventilation for about 2 minutes and vacuuming the apartment at the same time. To do this, open all windows (not on tip) and doors. If you have a few minutes, you can also wave a feather duster roughly over dusty surfaces. Then vacuum your apartment thoroughly while all windows are open. You can also vacuum your sofa upholstery.

Tip: If you put a few drops of essential oils or a few splashes of perfume on the vacuum cleaner bag, a fresh smell will spread throughout the home while vacuuming.

# 03 - Find the source of the odor

Often some things smell more like smoke than others. Focusing on the stronger sources will save you time removing the smoke odor from the home. Here it is called after the nose. For example, individual rooms often have a stronger smell of smoke or the smell of smoke is particularly strong in textiles such as sofas or curtains, which distribute the smell in the apartment. Trash cans containing the contents of ashtrays can also have a strong smell.

# 04 - Neutralize the smell of smoke with vinegar water

After you have ventilated crosswise and vacuumed, you can remove the remaining smoke odor from the apartment with the help of vinegar and water. Vinegar helps very well in neutralizing odors and is an old home remedy for smoking stink. Boil a saucepan of water, then fill with vinegar (Lemon juice also works) in the pot. You can then leave it in the room for several days. You can also use the lukewarm vinegar water to wipe over smooth surfaces such as furniture, storage surfaces or window sills. This further strengthens the odor-neutralizing effect.

Tip: You can also bring lemon wedges to the boil. The oils in the bowl give off a natural room fragrance through the water. However, you should not use it to clean surfaces.

# 05 - washing textiles

Textiles in particular absorb smoke odors particularly strongly. The simplest thing is to wash everything that has been directly exposed to the smell of smoke and that can be put in the washing machine. Curtains, bed linen, blankets and small pillows are available.

• Clean upholstery with a wet vacuum cleaner - A wet vacuum cleaner costs a few euros more and also takes a little more time, but along with the smell of smoke, you also get deeper soiling from the upholstery.

• Remove odors from upholstery with baking soda - You can also use baking soda or baking soda to remove odors from upholstery. To do this, sprinkle some baking soda or baking powder on the affected pads and let it work overnight. The next day you can simply vacuum the powder again.

• Dryer instead of washing machine - If you have a dryer and you need to go faster, you can also put textiles in the dryer and dry them in cold water for 20 to 30 minutes. Put some vinegar on a cloth and throw it in the dryer to absorb the smell of smoke. Many dryers also have a freshness program for such cases.

# 06 - Neutralize the smell of smoke with a room fragrance

If there is still a slight smell of nicotine in the apartment or individual rooms, you can now neutralize the residual odor with room fragrances. Room sprays and scented candles are particularly helpful. You can also distribute oranges with cloves in the apartment for the Christmas season. Scented sachets or sticks also help very well here. # 07 - Remove the smell of smoke from the car

Removing the smell of smoke from the car is especially difficult if you have been smoking regularly in the car. If the smell of smoke in the car is particularly intense, you should first vacuum the car thoroughly, also roughly walking over the upholstery and textiles. Textile cleaners for cars are particularly effective in removing smoke odors from textile fabrics. These are simply sprayed lightly onto the surfaces and rubbed in with a cloth. You should then wipe the fittings in the car with a care product. Most of the smoke odor in the car should now be gone. Air fresheners help neutralize the remaining nicotine smell in the car. These are available as scented sachets that can be distributed in the car, as air fresheners for ventilation or as an electric version for the cigarette lighter.
