How do I install a VPN

Establish a VPN connection under Windows 10

Whether for business or personal use, you can use your Windows 10 PC to connect to a VPN (virtual private network). You can use VPN to provide a more secure connection to your company's network or to the Internet (for example, if you work at home or in a café or similar public place).

Create a VPN profile

Before you can establish a VPN connection, you must set up a VPN profile on your PC. You can create a VPN profile yourself or set up a business account to get a VPN profile from your company.

Before you start:

  • If this is a profile for work, search your company's intranet for VPN settings, a VPN app, or contact your company's support representative.

  • If you need a profile for private use of a VPN service, search the Microsoft Store for an app for that service and see the VPN service's website for information on the VPN connection settings.

  1. Choose begin the Start button, and then select Settings > Network & Internet > VPN > add a VPN connectionout.

  2. Under Add a VPN connection follow these steps:

    • As VPN provider choose Windows (integrated) out.

    • In the dialog box, enter Connection name Enter a name that you can easily recognize (for example, "My personal VPN"). This is the VPN connection name you will look for when you connect.

    • Enter in the field Server name or IP address the address of the VPN server.

    • As VPN type select the type of VPN connection to be created. You need to know what type of VPN connection your company or VPN service is using.

    • As Credential type select the type of credentials to use. This can be a username and password, a one-time password, a certificate, or a smart card if you connect to a VPN for work. You can enter your username and password in the appropriate fields (optional).

  3. Choose to save out.

  4. If you want to edit the VPN connection information or make further settings, e.g. B. Proxy settings, select the VPN connection and then Expanded options out.

Establish a VPN connection

Once you've set up a VPN profile, you're ready to connect.

  1. Select the symbol on the far right of the taskbar network (or).

  2. Choose the VPN connection that you want to use, and then do one of the following, depending on what happens when you select the VPN connection:

    • When you see the Connect button under the VPN connection, highlight it Connect.

    • When the VPN section opens in the settings, highlight the VPN connection there and then Connect.

  3. When prompted, provide your username and password or other credentials.

After the connection has been established, the VPN connection is displayed under the name Connected displayed. If you want to check the connection to the VPN while working on the PC, select this networkIcon (either or) on the far right of the system tray. Under the VPN connection should Connected are displayed.
