What is your school lunch like?

What does Michelle Obama, the US First Lady, have to do with photos of unsavory looking school lunches? Since the US President's wife campaigned for healthy meals in schools, students have been served fresh and light meals. But not everyone likes it and not all school cooks have what it takes. See for yourself!

For some time now, high school students in the United States have been taking pictures of their lunch and tweeting it using the hashtag #ThanksMichelleObama. The First Lady has been fighting obesity among children and adolescents for years and has now campaigned to reform school lunches. The pupils should become fitter and live healthier lives. Now there are fruit and vegetables every day, only fat-free or low-fat milk, lots of whole grains and little salt in the school canteens.

But not all children and young people like the new school lunch. Which could be because many school chefs do not yet know how to deal with the new instructions and sometimes serve more than questionable dishes.

With fun to learning success - that's how it's done

Tweets from high school students

Student Hunter thanks Michelle Obama for a “mysterious porridge” that was touted as Spanish rice. But at least there is an apple.

There was a hamburger and applesauce for a schoolgirl in Minnesota.

We don't know exactly what that is supposed to be either.

“Is that supposed to be macaroni with cheese?” Student David wants to know.

Healthy and Fresh: But does it really have to be raw broccoli and cauliflower as a snack?

But not everyone is so unlucky with their school cook. The food from the student with the username Average Girl looks delicious. Nor can she understand why everyone blames Michelle Obama for her bad lunch.

And cafeteria cook Rebecca can't understand the excitement either and invites the first lady to dinner at her school.

Discussion about school lunches also with us

In Germany, too, there is currently a discussion about eating in school canteens. According to a recently published study, too much meat and too few vegetables are served up. In addition, the offer is much too small. Most of the time, students can only choose between two dishes, sometimes there is only one.

What is your school lunch like? Are you satisfied with it or is there room for improvement? Send us a photo of your lunch by email ([email protected]) or upload it to Facebook or Twitter using the hashtag #meinschulessen.
