Aerospace industry: As an engineer above the clouds

One industry that has more than quintupled its sales in the last 25 years is the German aerospace industry with one current annual sales of € 41 billion. The aerospace industry has been growing inexorably since 2002 and is therefore an area of ​​application with prospects for talented engineers. Compared to other branches of industry such as mechanical engineering, the automotive or electrical industries, the aerospace industry is relatively small. But she is for it one of the most innovative and powerful industries in Germany. A total of 114,000 people are employed in the aerospace industry in Germany. This number is expected to increase significantly in the next few years. It is extrapolated, for example, that the number of passengers in aviation will triple by 2050 and accordingly more aircraft will be on the move.

Aerospace technology is an interdisciplinary engineering science that combines electronics, robotics, measurement, control, regulation and materials technology. Aviation is mainly concerned with the transport of goods and people through the earth's atmosphere. Man differentiates between civil and military aviation. Also the Environmental protection - especially renewable energies - are becoming more and more important in the aerospace industry. Where can you work as an aerospace engineer?

Most aerospace engineers, however, work for civil aerospace companies. Other possibilities offer you e.g. space centers, airports and the well-known aircraft, spaceship and rocket manufacturers. The suppliers to the aerospace industry offer a particularly large number of engineering positions. Many medium-sized construction companies in Germany are suppliers for aircraft and spacecraft construction.

Due to the variety of your potential areas of application, you can find employers in the aerospace industry almost across Germany. International space centers such as the German Aerospace Center and ESA are located in Cologne and Darmstadt, for example. Aerospace technology suppliers are spread across the country. The market leaders in aviation in Germany are based in Hamburg. Other aerospace companies have mainly settled in the south, e.g. in Munich, Stuttgart, Aalen, Augsburg and Friedrichshafen. In total there are around 110 aviation companies and 13 private space companies in Germany. By the way, Germany still had its own rocket launch sites until 1964. Today, however, these facilities are no longer in operation and rocket launches are mainly carried out from the ESA spaceport in French Guiana.
