Some baby names should be banned
Names are always changing - completely new names are added, old names disappear in nirvana and suddenly reappear 50 years later in the hit lists. Every few decades, certain trends can be identified that come and go. But apart from these trends, some parents also try to create very special and individual names. But where is the limit and what is still allowed?
In general, parents are of course free to choose the name. The registry office then decides whether the name is approved or rejected. The registry office works together with the Society for the German Language (GfdS), which checks such names in an emergency. The child's well-being comes first. This means that if a given name has clear potential for teasing, exposing the child or disadvantaging it socially, it will be rejected. If you still want to enforce your name, you have to go to court. However, the chance of success is extremely slim, because the German courts almost always have the same point of view as the registry office. With rare foreign names, problems can occasionally arise. The same applies again and again to gender-neutral first names. The simplest solution here would be to choose a gender-specific middle name.
Here you will find a list of first names from the past that have been rejected by registry offices:
- Atomic peace
- Carnation heini
- La Toya
- MC Donald
- Distribution mix
- Peace With God Alone Through Jesus Christ
- Rose heart
- Tom Tom
Here you can find the strange but legal names. You can see from these names that the limit of what is allowed cannot be clearly drawn and it is more a matter of interpretation whether the child's well-being is not endangered with these names or not.
- Domino Carina
- Seven star
- Snow white
- Leonardo da Vinci Franz
- Michael Cougar
- Birch field
- Cinderella melody
How many first names can you have?
There is a court decision by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court on the question of the number of possible first names. A mother complained there who wanted to give her son twelve first names and was rejected by the registry office. These were "Chenekwahow, Tecumseh, Migiskau, Kioma, Ernesto, Inti, Prithibi, Pathar, Chajara, Majim, Henriko and Alessandr".
The court also rejected the choice of name because it does not correspond to the best interests of the child. On the one hand, the child has to memorize the complicated spelling and order himself and would therefore always attract attention in public. Due to the high number of first names, self-identification with one's own name is also lost. In the end, the court approved the first 5 first names.
The longest first name in Germany
The longest given first name in Germany so far is "Esenosarumensemwonken" (21 characters), it was approved in 2011. However, this name is not an invention - it comes from Nigeria.
