Is biodiesel a profitable business?

Rescue anchor for CNG filling stations: VERBIO supports the use of the revenue potential from the GHG quota

Leipzig, December 12, 2017. The Federal Cabinet has approved the content of the 38th BImSchV (Federal Immission Control Ordinance); they come into force on January 1, 2018. This opens up new opportunities to increase the profitability of CNG filling stations - for some locations, probably without exaggeration, the last lifeline to prevent closure.

The ordinance allows the greenhouse gas savings potential of CNG to be offset against the fulfillment of the GHG quota (greenhouse gas reduction quota). In addition to biomethane, from January 1, 2018, power-to-gas products and fossil natural gas can therefore also be counted towards the GHG quota to be met by the mineral oil companies.

“So far, only biogenic fuels have been approved to meet greenhouse gas reductions. With the recognition of CNG and LNG as fulfillment options for reducing greenhouse gases in the fuel market, there are now additional revenue opportunities for operators of CNG filling stations in order to increase the profitability of the stations ”, says Andreas Bodenmüller, Head of Trade at VERBIO AG. “The CNG filling station operator can now take on the quota obligation of a mineral oil company thanks to the emission savings that CNG has compared to the legally stipulated reference emission value for petrol and diesel. This opens up additional business for him, which improves the profitability of the petrol station. "

The key to making the best use of this potential is having a strong and experienced partner who can make this business profitable and secure.

As a biofuel producer with a broad product portfolio (verbiodiesel, verbioethanol, verbiogas), VERBIO has many years of experience in the field of quota transfer. VERBIO works very closely with the mineral oil industry in its day-to-day business and has been offering complete solutions to meet the GHG quota for many years. As a result, VERBIO can provide a tried and tested process and achieve market-driven conditions - even for petrol stations that only sell small quantities of CNG.

“All customers who offer verbiogas at their CNG filling stations are already using this model together with us. Now we are also available to all other CNG filling station operators as partners and intermediaries for the assumption of quota obligations, ”says the VERBIO contact person, Peter Küppers, explaining the new range of services from VERBIO. “Of course, we still have the goal of converting even more CNG filling stations to 100 percent biomethane. Because straw in the tank is basically the better alternative for climate protection. But it is currently also about securing the basic CNG infrastructure and improving the cost structure for the filling station operators. "
