the essentials in brief
- Lip glosses are suitable for all those who would like to have something inconspicuous for everyday life, as they are usually not heavily pigmented and therefore do not really give off color.
- When buying a lip gloss, you should always pay attention to the ingredients in this product. Nowadays, a multitude of cosmetic products, including lip glosses, contain substances that really have no place there.
- Since lip glosses have a rather sticky consistency and only leave a shiny result on the lips, they are not necessarily something for all beauty lovers. Otherwise, try a subtle lipstick.

Advice: Questions to Consider Before Buying a Lip Gloss
What does a lip gloss cost and where can you buy lip gloss?
You can purchase a lip gloss from a relatively low budget. So if you'd rather not invest so much money, I advise you to just take a look around a drugstore. There you can get a relatively good lip gloss from 1.50 euros.
However, if you have a little more money available and want to spend it, a perfumery, such as Douglas, not only offers a wide range of products, but also high-quality lip glosses from renowned brands from 20 euros.
Here you will find a brief overview of where you can buy lip glosses and how much they cost on the respective page.

|chanel.com||from 32 euros|
|amazon.de||from 0.69 euros|
What ingredients does lip gloss consist of?
The extent to which the following ingredients are contained in a lip gloss depends on the individual manufacturers and cannot be said across the board.
- Various oils, fats and waxes such as castor oil, beeswax, candellilla wax, argan oil, etc.
- Vitamin E.
The ingredients just mentioned help to provide your lips with moisture and make them shine.
- Diethyl phthalate (DEP)
- Silica Dimethyl Silylate
- Tocopheryl Acetate
These ingredients mentioned above could be critical, but unfortunately there is no certainty about them. If possible, these substances should be avoided as a health risk remains.
- CI 77163
- Sodium saccharin
- Dextrin Palmitate (palm oil)
These three so-called ingredients are harmful or even carcinogenic and actually have no place in cosmetic articles. So avoid them as much as possible, not only in lip products but also in other products.
At that time, the recipe was still very viscous, so that the lip color was difficult to apply. There was also the problem of durability, which was not particularly long. This problem has now been solved by adding polymers!
Decision: What types of lip gloss are there and which one is right for you?
Basically, one can differentiate between four different types of lip gloss:
- Lip gloss in bottle with applicator
- Tegel-shaped lip gloss
- Lip gloss in tube size
- Lip gloss in pen form
Due to its liquid consistency and shiny properties, lip gloss makes the lips appear fuller and more radiant. In order for you to be able to handle the product optimally, correct handling is of crucial importance. To achieve a long-lasting result, you can also apply a primer before using the gloss.
In the following section we will go into more detail on the types of lip gloss mentioned above. We will try to help you make a decision by listing the advantages and disadvantages.
What distinguishes a lip gloss in bottle form and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Lip gloss in vials is the most common type. It is often particularly fluid and shiny. The applicator sponge allows you to apply it easily and precisely, no matter where you are. You don't need to use extra brushes or get your fingers dirty.
To further improve the result, you can outline your lips with a color-matching contour pencil. You can also apply the gloss over lipstick. Keep in mind that the sponge on the applicator will pick up the color of the lipstick.
- Easy and precise application
- Liquid consistency
- Fingers stay clean
- No additional equipment required
- Space saving
- Difficult to clean applicator
- The applicator can bend
What distinguishes a lip gloss in a tegel shape and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
Lip gloss in Tegel is usually a bit more compact in terms of its consistency. With this variant you will definitely need additional equipment. You can apply the gloss with either a disposable applicator, a makeup brush, or your fingers.
If you use a finger for the application, you should wash your hands beforehand in order to keep the contents of the jar hygienic. However, this lip gloss is not recommended for on the go and a spontaneous freshening up of lip make-up.
- Sticky fingers
- Difficult when applied spontaneously
- Additional equipment required
What distinguishes a lip gloss in tube form and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The lip gloss in tubes was particularly popular with the younger generation when it was launched. Usually you get it in a plastic container with a small hole at the top.
Basically, it is easy to use. However, precise work is not always possible. The corners of the mouth are difficult to hit with the tube. In addition, pressing too hard can put too much of the gloss on the lips. You should therefore work carefully or use an additional disposable applicator.
If you just want to give your lips a slight sheen, this is a good choice. If you want to apply the gloss over a lipstick, you should preferably do it with dabbing movements to achieve a nice result.
- Easy to use
- Easy cleaning
- If you press too much product too hard, application will not be as precise as with an applicator
What distinguishes a lip gloss in stick form and what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The gloss in pencil form is offered in lipstick form as well as a pencil for sharpening. Newly purchased products can be easily and precisely applied. These are also well suited for on the go. For the classic pen shape, sooner or later you will have to get a suitable sharpener. Conventional sharpeners are rarely suitable for this due to the consistency and size of the gloss.
- Easy to use
- Precise application
- Space saving
- Separate sharpener required
Purchase criteria: You can use these factors to compare and rate lip gloss
In the following I would like to show you which factors you can use to compare and evaluate lip gloss with each other. This will make it easier for you to decide whether a particular model is right for you or not.
In summary, these are:
- the color
- Mineral oils and / or other harmful substances
- nourishing ingredients
In the following you can read what the individual purchase criteria are all about.
In contrast to lipsticks, lip glosses are often not as heavily pigmented because the focus should be on gloss and not a heavily pigmented color. Nevertheless, everyone who likes to have it rather subtle in terms of color will surely find what they are looking for quickly with lip glosses.
Pink, apricot, beige and all associated nuances are the most popular colors when it comes to lip glosses. As already mentioned, the color is only an addition because the main focus should be on the shiny lips, which in turn makes a lip gloss suitable for everyday use and should no longer be missing in a handbag.
Mineral oils and / or other harmful substances
As in other cosmetic products, there are unfortunately more or less dangerous ingredients in lip glosses. What exactly or how much of it is in the different lip glosses depends on the individual manufacturers.
You, me and actually all of us should pay more attention to what's inside a product and not just be dazzled by the external appearance, because it works without these harmful ingredients!
Mineral oil, for example, is used in the cosmetics industry because it is particularly inexpensive and durable, but it consists of two fractions that pose different health risks: MOSH (saturated mineral oil hydrocarbons) are not quite as risky as MOAH (aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons), which in turn have been classified as potentially carcinogenic.
Often, however, it is not stated directly that it is mineral oil, instead other names are used: Cera Microcristallina, Ceresin, Mineral Oil, Ozokerite, Paraffin, Paraffinum Liquidum, Petrolatum - so avoid the substances just mentioned!
You can find a detailed list of all harmful information in the guide.
The gloss on the lips that a lip gloss leaves behind does not only look beautiful, there are often many, more or less, nourishing substances behind it.
These include ingredients such as argan oil and beeswax that provide your lips with moisture and make them shine at the same time.
It is often very difficult to find out which exact substances are in a lip gloss and, above all, which of them are good and which should be avoided. So if you are not sure, just find out more about it on the Internet, because there you will almost always find all the relevant information you may need.
The vegan lifestyle is very popular at the moment, but many do not even know that most lip glosses contain animal ingredients, which is why it is so important for me to explain this point to you in more detail.
Possible animal ingredients in lip glosses:
- Beeswax: Often only given under the name “wax”.
- Hyaluronic acid: Originally obtained from cockscombs, nowadays it is almost exclusively produced biotechnologically.
- Carmine / Cochineal / CI 75470: A red pigment obtained from cochineal scale insects.
These substances are out of the question for people who have committed themselves to a vegan lifestyle, but it does not automatically mean that all of these substances are bad. It is up to you to decide whether it is important to you personally and whether you pay attention or want to pay attention to it. So the motto is: Vegan is good, but it doesn't necessarily have to be.
Lip glosses are not exactly known for their long shelf life, but there are a few points you can pay attention to in order to make the result last longer on the lips.
First, you should make sure that your lip gloss is always stored in cooler and dark places as best you can. Because if you often leave your lip gloss in the sun, the texture is changed and this in turn affects the durability.
You should also pay attention to the packaging when buying, because it is usually indicated whether the lip gloss guarantees a long hold. After eating, drinking or kissing, you should definitely reapply it, as most lip glosses are neither waterproof nor kiss-proof.
Trivia: Facts worth knowing about the topic of lip gloss
Can you make lip gloss yourself?
Yes. If you don't really like the lip gloss in a drugstore or in a perfumery, you can easily create your own lip gloss in just a few steps. All you need is the following:
- an old lipstick that you no longer use
- Vaseline or another fat such as coconut fat
- natural flavors such as rose or vanilla (optional)
First, mix 2 tablespoons of the petroleum jelly with your old lipstick and some honey. When you have mixed everything together well, the still viscous solid mass is heated over a hot water bath until it is liquid. Then simply fill it into a small container and let it cool down - and your self-made lip gloss is ready!
What are the alternatives to lip gloss?
Since lip gloss has a rather sticky consistency and the result is actually always shiny, this product does not suit everyone. An alternative would be a lightly pigmented lipstick that gives your lips a touch of color and is still nourishing. However, if you want to do without the color entirely, you can just try it with a lip balm. As you can see, there is a suitable product for everyone.
