Website design recommendations

The big homepage builder comparison for 2021 - what good are the providers?

I don't know about you, but I've never been a fan of learning how to program. I tried it, but failed miserably! Still, I wanted to know how to build a website for myself, mainly for the purpose of sharing pictures and posting articles.

Eventually, that desire for a tool that was easy to use led me to my first Website builder bumped, Weebly. That was in 2009, and website builders have exploded in popularity since then.

I founded WebsiteToolTester to help beginners like you (and me!) To easily create their own website. Funnily enough, here in the team we have had the website builder from for a long time Webnode used to operate this site. But when there were over 200,000 visitors per month and 7 different languages - which is beyond the capabilities of any construction kit - we are closed WordPress changed.

Even so, we still use website builders like Wix, Weebly and Jimdo.

Tip # 1: Do you already know our Smart Finder website builder? Simply answer 5 questions and we will show you which kit is best for your project! Try it!

What types of websites can a website builder create?

The great thing about these construction kits is that they offer templates for a wide variety of industries. You pick one and just add your own text and images. Plus, you don't have to start from scratch, which makes it super easy to get impressive results in no time.

Homepage builders are perfect for small companies, online shops, photographers, portfolios, restaurants as well as clubs and associations.

Websites that require a database (e.g. real estate advertisements, job exchanges), on the other hand, are not that easy to create. For them you need a different tool and more time. The first choice in this case is: WordPress.

And since we are often asked this question: No, hyper-complex sites like Airbnb, eBay or Facebook are absolutely inaccessible. You would need a whole development team to create a website like this.

If you specifically want to sell digital downloads, then take a look at this comprehensive guide.

Tip # 2: The ranking table on this page lists the best website builders. For the best online shop systems or detailed information about WordPress, please read the relevant blog articles on our site.

A small note about the prices that we have listed here: As a rule, this is an annual billing.

How do I find the right website builder provider?

You have now seen our ranking table and you may still be wondering how you now know which website builder is best for your specific project.

You can find all test reports on website builders on our website: ... Create website: how do I find the best website builder? 2019-03 -19T11: 10: 32.000Zhttps: //

Even if you hardly take a risk when choosing a website builder these days, there are a few things to look out for before deciding on a provider:

  • Free trial: You should definitely be able to test the construction kit without obligation. Most providers offer free plans (with limited functions) or at least a money-back guarantee.
  • Support: Check what kind of support is offered (email, phone, live chat, etc.). It is also good to know whether there are many active users (e.g. in Facebook groups) with whom you can exchange ideas.
  • price: Unfortunately, sometimes the prices are a bit confusing. In our test reports, however, we always highlight the advantages and disadvantages of the individual tariffs as well as (hidden) additional costs, if there are any.
  • Functions: While every project has its own specific needs, there are some common things to look out for. E.g. a blog function, SEO adjustments, smartphone-friendly designs, an online shop, decent picture galleries and password protection for the entire website or individual pages.
  • domain: You should be able to use a domain even if it was bought from another company. Alternatively, it should be possible to move the domain to the website builder.
  • Email accounts: If you use your site for business, you should get an email address with your domain instead [email protected] invest. Below are some handy tips about email addresses.

The detailed website builder comparison

1. Wix

Full focus on design

You can try Wix for free here: And you can find our detailed test report here: ... Wix test report: a good choice for your own website? 2018-08-31T09: 09: 05.000Zhttps: //

With an unbelievable 110 million users, Wix is certainly the largest website builder ever. It started as a Flash-based platform and ran into major problems in 2012 after Google and Apple declared war on Flash almost simultaneously. That's why you sometimes still hear old rumors that Wix websites are not ranking well in search engines (which you can safely ignore). Wix has reinvented itself using HTML5 technology and clearly wants to be the number 1 website builder. And by the way, you don't have to worry, you don't have to touch any code yourself.

The development speed of the kit is breathtaking: Hardly a month goes by without Wix announcing an important new feature. Among other things: Wix Bookings, a convenient self-service appointment booking system for your customers. Wix Restaurants, a (commission-free) add-on that allows your customers to book tables, order food from you and take a look at your menu.

What we like: the flair for design. One of the greatest advantages is that there are hundreds of well-designed templates that you can use for free. Adapting to your needs is very easy. And then there is the huge range of functions. Thanks to App Markets, you can easily add new features to your website (e.g. a newsletter subscription, an event calendar, a forum, etc.).

What should be improved: Wix is not the best kit for larger websites with e.g. 30 pages and more. The navigation is not very deep and does not allow very complex structures. Also, if you find your existing one boring at some point, it's not possible to simply switch to a completely new template (it's easier with other website builders). Likewise, the loading speed is not the best, especially on cell phones.

2. Jimdo

Made in Germany

This kit provider “Made in Germany” (in Hamburg to be precise) has been asserting itself in the website builder industry since 2007. First, Jimdo established itself with its “classic” Jimdo Editor, an extremely popular kit Solution. For a while now, Jimdo has been putting all its energy into the successor, more precisely into an intelligent modular system that internally Dolphin is called. It should be even easier and faster. The concrete promise: a website in just 3 minutes!

With the help of a question-and-answer quiz, the intelligent assistant generates a first draft website for you in no time at all. If you wish, the editor will automatically pull the images for your website from social media accounts such as Instagram and Facebook or from Google Maps. A homepage can hardly be built faster. A responsive version of the editor can be used on smartphones and tablets.

Basically, Jimdo's new tool is more suitable for smaller websites and online shops due to the limited possibilities and may therefore not be equally suitable for all users.

What we like: The extremely easy handling, because a website “skeleton” can indeed be created within a few minutes. The intelligent assistant automatically searches for the most appealing images from Google, Instagram and Co. - not bad! The designs look modern and are suitable for various mobile devices. In addition, in contrast to many US providers, Jimdo has also adapted its product to the European market. This can be very helpful because there are differences in terms of data protection and taxes, for example. So you don't have to adjust everything yourself.

What should be improved: More options, for example with regard to the design of the website, would be desirable. In addition, there are only a few integrated features, e.g. it is not possible to connect a blog or to provide the page with password protection. Since there is no app market and no HTML code can be inserted, the customization options are very limited. The online shop can also be expanded due to fewer functions. There are only very limited SEO setting options with the intelligent construction kit. Even if one has to say, to be fair, that the construction kit aims at extreme simplicity and the abstinence of various functions is probably explained by this - a few more functions such as with Wix and Weebly would still be important.

3. Webnode

The language talent

Even if not quite as popular in German-speaking countries as Jimdo or Wix, Webnode is still one of the most widely used web building kits worldwide. Webnode offers both positives and negatives: some features are really modern and almost unique in the industry, but it also lacks some basic functionalities that can make it a "no-go" for some.

A free domain is included with most offers for the first year. In addition, they sometimes have their own free e-mail accounts (e.g. [email protected]).

What we like: The greatest feature of Webnode is the ease with which you can create multilingual websites; only a few website builders have something like this to offer. We also like the designs that are modern and responsive. So they automatically look good on all devices. The SEO features are solid as well and have everything most websites need.

What should be improved: The blogging system lacks some important functions such as categories, tags or a native comment system. If you want to create an online store, forget about it! None has been implemented in the newer editor. There is neither an app store nor its own mobile app.

4. 1 & 1 - MyWebsite

Homepages for companies

You can find more detailed information on the 1 & 1 construction kit at: In this video test report ... 1 & 1 MyWebsite test report: How does the website construction kit for companies fare? 2018 -02-21T10: 02: 16.000Zhttps: //

The internet giant from Germany has primarily targeted companies with its website builder 1 & 1 MyWebsite. Useful functions such as an online business card and tailor-made industry and design templates have been packed into the completely redesigned editor.

To design the pages, use the drag & drop editor to drag all elements such as text and images to the desired location. This makes it extremely easy to create a modern website. All designs can be optimally adapted for tablets and cell phones.

Another highlight is the target group-specific news. This allows you to specify that, for example, only visitors from Berlin or Munich should be shown a specific notice about a discount campaign.

What we like: It is extremely easy to add more languages to the website. There is an extra function for this that is almost always missing from the competition. In addition, the domain and an email address are included free of charge. The included telephone support that 1 & 1 offers is just as pleasing.

What should be improved: Even if we are very impressed with the website construction kit, 1 & 1 does not offer a non-binding test version. Currently only a 30-day money-back guarantee is offered. Fortunately, the termination is not complicated. 1 & 1 MyWebsite is not the right choice if you need an online shop. At the moment, none is included.

5. Weebly

Free & Easy

You can find our detailed Weebly test report here: 0:11 - tariff overview 0:49 - dashboard ... Weebly test report - all advantages and disadvantages of version 4 in a fast run2016 -10-27T15: 46: 34.000Zhttps: //

Weebly has always been very popular with us because there is really hardly an editor that is easier to use. No wonder, then, that 40 million websites have already been created with it. Every new function that is added is very well thought out: for example the online shop and member management. Even large websites are no problem for Weebly's content management system. We ourselves know Weebly pages that easily reach more than 150 individual pages. The best: there is neither a memory limit nor a limitation of the bandwidth.

Weebly Pro costs $ 12 a month and includes not only a search function, but also its own video and audio player. All in all, you can hardly go wrong with Weebly.

What we like: The templates are not only stylish, but also responsive and adapt perfectly to mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. In addition, there is a clever side menu with which you can wonderfully adapt the individual pages to your wishes. Last but not least, there is the app center, which contains numerous extra functions.

What should be improved: There are currently nowhere near as many apps in the App Center as in the Wix App Market. Unfortunately, Weebly is not particularly suitable for multilingual websites. The support is basically available in German, but not all channels are available (currently only e-mail) and not all help articles have been completely translated.

6. Squarespace

Nice to watch

Squarespace has been on the market since 2003 and according to its own information, "millions" of websites have been created on the provider's platform. There is hardly anyone who doesn't like the sleek design of the Squarespace site and the impressive appearance. The question, however, is: is the vendor's product as good as their self-marketing?

One thing must be said in advance: it is not cheap. The lowest no-frills tariff starts at € 11 a month. What sets Squarespace apart is the blogging function, which is one of the best of all website builders and is only surpassed by WordPress. And recently the tool has been working harder to expand its online shop. So what else does it have to offer?

You can choose from numerous and - admittedly - beautiful templates. These are all optimized for tablets and smartphones and include different types of photo galleries. As far as the SEO options are concerned, Squarespace recently improved the functionality so that you can now completely customize all relevant areas (page titles, page descriptions, etc.). In addition to the many advantages, there are unfortunately also a few weaknesses.

What we like: The designs are brilliant and pretty flexible too. We also had pretty good experiences with the (English-speaking) support. Squarespace is THE website builder for anyone wanting to start a blog, because no other builder offers such a sophisticated blogging feature. German support is still being set up, but almost all important help documents are available in German and there is German support via email (response within a day).

What should be improved: It is a bit disappointing that there is no backup and restore function. It's not the most user-friendly drag-and-drop editor; other construction sets are better suited for beginners. We also tested the page speed (also an important factor for SEO), but unfortunately it didn't blow our socks off. In addition, we would like to see a larger selection of external applications (comparable to the Wix app market, for example). It is also a pity that no domains with .de, .at or .ch are available. It would also be great if the tool could expand its support via live chat to German, which is currently only available in English.

7. GoDaddy Website Builder

Marketing from a single source

You may be familiar with GoDaddy for the domains and web hosting, but it turns out they have their own website builder too. That's exactly what GoDaddy Websites + Marketing focuses on: giving you the tools to build your website and do it all yourself, email marketing, social media, blogging and SEO.

The Website Builder has seen a few overhauls in the past few years, but there are a few key differences with this latest version. For one thing, you can now create a website for free. New functions are also available to you, e.g. a creator for social media content, password-protected pages and an integrated analytics tool.

Other important add-ons include an appointment booking option, an email marketing tool and a messaging function. These can be used (mainly) free of charge.

But remember that the SEO functions are very limited with the lower tariffs and e-commerce is only included in the highest tariff level.

What we like: The editor is very user-friendly and can be operated via mobile devices. The templates may not blow you off your feet, but they are all responsive. It's also great that you can take advantage of many of the add-on marketing features at no additional cost. The dashboard and the editor are available in German.

What should be improved: It is a real shame that you cannot use the full range of SEO functions with the free and basic tariffs, and even with the higher tariffs you have to cut back on some SEO areas. We also believe that web pages created with previous versions should be better supported, especially given the fact that the kit is updated every few years. Unfortunately, support is only available in English.

The homepage discounter is definitely one thing, namely cheap. This Danish provider stormed into the website builder market a few years ago and offered the lowest prices we've seen so far. also has hosting in its program, which is really handy as you can use both a web builder and a CMS like WordPress.

But can get expensive. If you need more than 5 individual pages, you have to purchase the premium subscription. Then it is almost as expensive as Wix and Weebly, but with a rather limited range of functions in comparison.

What we like: The templates look modern and are responsive. This will make your website look neat on any device. The support that you can reach via email or live chat is excellent. Another positive aspect is that the storage space offered is extremely generous.

What should be improved: Unfortunately there are some important limitations. For example, if you need a blog, it needs to be added separately using another editor. Unfortunately, you cannot protect your website with a password because this function is simply missing. Another weak point is that the e-commerce system is very elementary and only suitable for the smallest online shops.

Tip # 4: The latest trend in website creation is AI-powered website builders (e.g. Wix ADI and Jimdo Dolphin). This development is currently only just beginning and the editors are mostly still in their infancy.

Now let's address a few general questions you might have.

General questions when getting started with website creation

Over the years we have come across these questions again and again. Hopefully we can answer some for you too! If you can't find your question here, please feel free to leave us a comment at the bottom of this page.

Which is the best construction kit on the German-speaking market?

In principle, every website builder can also be used in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. If you are looking for a product that is specifically tailored to the German-speaking market, you can take a look at Jimdo. The website builder from Hamburg has conveniently integrated some important features with which you can design your website in accordance with German law. Thanks to the legal text generator, you can save yourself the need to go to legal advice. With the GROW Legal tariff ($ - / month) you receive a personalized data protection declaration and imprint, which are also automatically updated for you.

Can I really dare to do it myself or do I need a web designer?

This question is really asked a lot and the answer is, “It all depends!” Please remember that you should budget around 1500 € for working with a developer ... and that's the bottom end. For changes and further developments, you pay the hourly rate of your developer. In addition, there are ongoing hosting and domain costs (around another 80-100 € per year).

With a website builder you can expect roughly 80-150 € per year (all inclusive), depending on which provider you use. Learn more about the cost of building a website.

In fact, in many cases, it is very good to become familiar with creating a website. Even if you ultimately decide to hire a web designer, you will have a much better idea of who to look for and what your website should look like. Our free e-book “Homepage creation for absolute beginners” explains all important aspects of a website project to you.

How does it work with the domains?

The domain is the web address of your website. Our domain is called You can see them in the address bar of your browser:

Such domain costs around 8-15 € per year, depending on the top-level domain (for example .de, .com, .at You can buy your domain from providers such as DomainFactory or Netcup.

If you're using a website builder, you can usually buy them there too. This makes it a little easier to handle since you only deal with one company. If you use WordPress or program the website yourself, you will also need web space to which you can upload your website's files and data. With a website builder you don't need any web space because it is already included.

With your domain, you can also have your own E-mail address get (e.g. [email protected]). This makes a much more professional impression than an address from Gmail or GMX. Most website builders refer to Google Workspace for this, which costs around € 5 / month per email account. It's cheaper with Zoho Workplace, where you get 5 e-mail accounts completely free, but you have to take care of the setup yourself.

Homepage builders in Google Trends

Google offers this interesting graph with which you can compare different website builder providers. You can see quite clearly that Jimdo strongly dominates the market in Germany. Compared to the front runner, Wix only has about half the search volume, but is catching up relatively quickly; this could have something to do with recent marketing campaigns. Of course you have to subtract the search queries that refer to things other than the website builder ...

Weebly, Webnode and Cabanova lag behind in the back places. Unfortunately, we were unable to integrate 1 & 1 and Strato in a meaningful way, as it is not possible to clearly distinguish the search queries from the rest of the vendors' product portfolio.

How can I expand the functionality of my website?

You may need additional apps for your website such as an online booking system, a function for event planning or location search, a live chat or even a chatbot. Some website builders like Wix, Shopify, WordPress, and Weebly have their own app store that lets you add hundreds of plugins with just a few clicks.

Wix App Market

But even if there is no app store, you can easily integrate apps using the source code provided. As a rule, this can be done very easily using copy-and-paste.

The best choice for your industry

Of course, not all projects are created equal. And of course, there are website builders that are better suited for photographers than bloggers. Let me introduce our favorites for each application:

The Best Small Business Website Builder

For a business website with a maximum of 20-30 pages, we would suggest, especially if you want a special design. The big advantage is that you can choose from around 300 different templates.

If you are looking for a very user-friendly alternative, you should take a look at Jimdo. Thanks to the intelligent wizard, you can create your first website draft within a few minutes. However, the editor does not offer as many functions, so it is better suited for simpler websites.

If you don't fear technical challenges and need a website that is scalable, is probably for you, especially if you want to build a large website with between 50 and several hundred pages. Thanks to the thousands of plugins and themes, pretty much anything is possible with WordPress. All you have to do is spend the time setting it up.

The best blogging system

Basically, all of the website builders we're talking about come with their own blogging tool. But how good are the systems? It depends. If you want to be professional on the go, WordPress is probably your best choice. Then there's Squarespace and Weebly if you'd rather have a simpler tool that is less powerful.

Since running a successful blog is a science in itself, I would encourage you to read our in-depth blogging article. There you will find possible hosting providers and our template recommendations.

The best website builder for photographers

Thanks to the fantastic photo galleries, takes the top spot again here. Photography websites and portfolios are an integral part of Wix, so to speak. Just take a look at the photography and design templates and see for yourself.

The best e-commerce kits

Do you want to start an online shop? Excellent! E-commerce is an exciting adventure. Anyone who wants to start with this should be well prepared. If your online shop is to be scalable and eventually contain hundreds of items, you need a professional tool like Shopify or the WordPress plugin WooCommerce.

If all you want to do is start a small online store that is easy to use, it probably makes more sense to use Wix or Jimdo. These systems are cheaper than the "known giants" and should be sufficient to get you started.

Website builder software: can I install it on my PC?

Offline software solutions for websites were once very popular. Does Adobe Dreamweaver mean anything to you? However, nowadays most people clearly prefer to use hosted website builders like Wix, Weebly, and Jimdo because they are easier to use.

Depending on what you prefer, you may still want to use an installable website builder on your PC or Mac. In this case I would suggest you take a look at Mobirise, for example. You can also find more information about offline software solutions for websites in this blog post.

Tip # 5: We often see our readers "over-analyzing" their website project and spending days comparing every little feature. What usually works a lot better is just sign up for a free trial and try the tools out! This way, you will quickly find out what is or is not suitable for you.

As you can see, there are tons of different website tools out there. Overall, the most popular provider among our readers is Wix. He has become quite a dominant force in the world of website building. However, that does not mean that his peers are necessarily the worse choice. It ultimately depends on your specific case.

If you are still unsure which tool is the right one, I recommend at this point to try the Smart Finder again and answer 5 simple questions. Good luck with your website project!

Otherwise, you are welcome to leave a comment!
