How do I enjoy spending time alone?

Why being alone is actually good for you

There are people who love to spend time alone. Others, on the other hand, fear it and do everything they can to not be alone. They are afraid of missing out and being left out. In today's fast-paced world, however, it is important that we occasionally spend time with ourselves.

Being alone is often mistaken for loneliness. These two things have absolutely nothing to do with each other. When you are alone, you spend time with yourself. You get to know yourself, process thoughts and ideas. Being alone can be very nice and has nothing to do with loneliness at all. Because loneliness is a feeling of sadness triggered by negative feelings or isolation.

Having to be alone is the hardest part, being alone is the best thing.

7 reasons why it is important to spend time with yourself

But whether you enjoy being alone or not, it's scientifically proven that spending time with yourself is good for your body and mind.

1. You become more confident and independent

If you spend more time alone with yourself, you will get to know yourself better. You deal with what kind of situation you are currently in, how you ended up there and what goals you still want to achieve in your life. This way you know better what is good for you and what is not. You automatically let yourself be less influenced by others because you know exactly what you want and what you have to do for it. And once you have noticed what you can do on your own and, above all, how good you feel about it, you become unstoppable and no longer depend on others.

2. You can recharge your batteries and become more productive

In order to function properly, your body, especially your brain, needs regular periods of rest. You surely also know that when you have to work longer again or have simply been active for a longer period of time, you feel really drained and limp afterwards. This exhaustion is a signal from your body that it urgently needs a break.

Alone allows your body to relax and regenerate. You recharge your batteries and can think more clearly again and work more productively.

3. You deal with stress better

When you are alone, you can concentrate fully on yourself. You have no outside influences and therefore nothing that distracts or negatively influences you. You are taking a little break from the hectic everyday life and that is not only good for your body, but also for your mind. This helps you to process stress better and to go through everyday life more relaxed. By being alone regularly, you can also prevent stress.

4. You get to know yourself better

Only when you know yourself, accept yourself, and have built a strong relationship with yourself, can you enter into a relationship with other people. A stable relationship with yourself is based on how well you can be alone.

5. You can make better use of your boredom

Who does not know that, of themselves or of their fellow human beings: "Oh, I'm so boring, let's do something". Boredom is a sign that you don't deal with yourself enough and have no goals in life.

The next time you are bored and do not know what to do with your time, then just sit in a quiet place and enjoy the time with yourself. Do yourself with your thoughts, your ideas or your goals. If necessary, write them down and process them.

6. You can do things that you want to do

Far too often we make compromises in everyday life, do without out of love for our fellow human beings and do things that we actually don't enjoy at all. We take far too little time for ourselves and for the things that give us the most pleasure. Often, however, it is also because the partner or friends don't feel like doing it and we don't want to do it alone. Be it hiking, cycling, swimming or visiting a new place. It will be just as much, if not more, fun on your own than with someone. Just dare, enjoy being alone, you will not regret it.

7. You are getting stronger mentally

It is important for us humans to have strong connections with other people. That gives us energy and support in difficult times. But it is just as important for us to be alone now and then. Studies have shown that the ability to spend time alone can be linked to better stress management, increased happiness, and greater self-satisfaction. People who are often alone and enjoy time with themselves also have a lower risk of depression or burnout.

I have to be alone a lot. What I've achieved is just a success of being alone.

Franz Kafka (1883-1924), German-speaking writer
