A long period of conquests followed, culminating in the genocide and expulsion of the Armenians around 1915. The churches and monasteries of Armenia are embedded in a beautiful landscape and show their own formal language. Visit the main cultural sites of Armenia, from the Ararat Plain to the hidden monastic academies of the forested north.

Itinerary

Day 1: Departure
In the evening scheduled flight via Vienna in the direction of Yerevan.

Day 2: Impressions of the capital
Early morning arrival in Yerevan: Hotel occupancy for one night. After a break and a late breakfast, we explore the Armenian capital. We start with a visit to the Historical museum. After that, orienting City tour keep up with the Viewing platform and at the foot of the cascade with wonderful views of the city. The visit to the genocide memorial Tsitsernakaberd deals with genocide and the displacement of the Armenian people.

Day 3: At the foot of the Aragaz
Drive through the barren landscape to the monastery, which is idyllically situated on the Kazakh gorge Saghmosavank from the 13th century. The "impregnable" fortress is located at an altitude of 2,300 m Amberd (7th century) at the foot of Aragaz (4,096 m), the highest mountain in Armenia. 4th day: Churches and monasteries
In the village Odzun impresses a unique basilica from the 6th century. Continue to the monastery built on a high plateau Sanahin (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Having lunch in Alaverdiwhich is famous for its grill specialties. Then to the monastery Haghbat (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which with its Allerlöser Kreuzstein became a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. (approx. 200 km)

Day 5: Blue Pearl of Armenia
First we visit the monastery Goshavank: The cross stone to the right of the entrance is considered to be the most beautiful in the country. Continue to the picturesquely situated in the high mountains Lake Sevan, the "blue pearl of Armenia": visit of the Sewank Monastery (9th century) on the peninsula, which was once an island and served as a place of exile for the Armenian nobility. At the village Noradus we see one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the country with around 650 cross stones from six centuries. Return to Yerevan: Hotel occupancy for four nights. (approx. 145 km)

Day 6: Masterpieces of Armenian Art
Past the village Mussa Ler, in which the survivors of the mountain of refuge Mussa Dagh, made famous by Franz Werfel, were settled, to the imposing ruins of the first Armenian round church Zvartnoz (UNESCO World Heritage Site). Visit to the church Surb Hripsimé, a masterpiece of classical Armenian architecture. In Etchmiadzin, the seat of the Armenian Catholicos and religious center of the Armenian people, opportunity to attend a church service from time to time; Visit to the main cathedral (UNESCO World Heritage Site). In the afternoon, listen to the sounds of one Duduk player: The duduk, the national instrument of Armenia, is a woodwind instrument mostly made of apricot wood. The church Surb Gajané (7th century) was built on the site of the martyrdom of the legendary nuns. (approx. 60 km)

7th day: Gregor, the enlightener
trip to Khor Virap, where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned in a "deep" pit for 15 years because of his commitment to the Christian faith before he became a missionary to Armenia: Unique view of the "holy mountain" of the Armenians on the other side of the Turkish border, the Ararat. Day 8: Temple and cave monastery

Day 9: Farewell and journey home
In the early morning transfer to the airport. Return flight via Vienna to Germany.

Important instructions

The flights are operated as night flights.
Arrival: Departure Frankfurt approx. 7:50 pm, arrival Yerevan approx. 3:55 am;
Return journey: departure from Yerevan approx. 04.45 a.m., arrival Frankfurt approx. 09.40 a.m.

Entry and health regulations

German citizens need a passport that is still valid after leaving the country at least six months must be valid.
Vaccinations are not compulsory when entering the country directly from Europe.

Other departure locations

Connecting flights from other German airports to / from Vienna are possible on request and at an additional cost (subject to availability)!
