This allows even wet leaves to be lifted and driven in front of you until they are piled up in a corner or a specific area. Now you just have to bend down again to pick up the leaves at this one point. The pure engine power (given in watts) does not say much about the actual work performance of the leaf blower. More important is the blowing speed, which indicates the speed of the exiting air stream. The higher the speed, the better the device is suitable for thick, damp layers of leaves, large areas and fast work. For use in the home garden, an inexpensive device with a medium blowing speed (200 km / h) is usually sufficient. If you want to work on larger areas or remove damp leaves, you should rely on devices with more power.

Handling, weight and volume

Leaf blowers with infinitely adjustable power make work easier. Dry leaves whirl up when the blowing speed is too high, while moist leaves can often only be lifted from the ground with a very powerful air stream. In addition, extras such as ergonomically shaped or adjustable handles, a carrying strap and the lowest possible weight ensure that the device can be used comfortably for a long time. The lightest devices weigh less than 1.5 kilograms, the heaviest more than six kilograms. The volume (in decibels = dB) should also be taken into account. Battery, cable or gasoline?

In general, there are two different drive methods for leaf blowers: They can be powered by gasoline or electrically. With the electric drives, a battery or a wired power supply are possible. Electric leaf blowers are often battery operated so that they can also be operated away from the mains. Combination devices with integrated leaf blowers require more power and are therefore usually not battery-operated. Electrical appliances with cables predominate here.

Cable-operated devices have all the advantages of battery-operated devices, but there are no disadvantages such as the short running time, the limited performance and the effort required to charge the batteries. The only disadvantage is the cable, which limits the range of use of the devices. Compared to lawn mowers and similar devices, however, there is no risk of leaf blowers damaging a cable or getting caught in the device.


Professional, commercially used leaf blowers are expensive and hardly worthwhile for home use. For blowing away leaves and cleaning surfaces, less expensive devices are sufficient. Two devices shared the victory of our test: The cordless leaf blower Einhell GE-CL 18 and the gasoline-powered leaf blower Makita BHX 2501.

The Einhell GE-CL 18 is more suitable for small to medium-sized gardens and for light tasks such as blowing away dirt, dry leaves, flowers or needles from flat surfaces or from cracks due to its short running time and medium blowing capacity. On the other hand, it is very light, easy to handle and offers an unbeatable price-performance ratio. The Makita BHX 2501 runs on gasoline, is more powerful and has no limitation in terms of running time. It is also suitable for more demanding tasks and also copes well with damp leaves or twigs.

Ultimately, however, it is also a question of personal preference whether a cordless device with a simple power button is desired or whether it should be a gasoline-powered device, because refilling gasoline, more complex starting and occasional oil changes are not for everyone.
