What doctors in private practice in Germany earn

There are 119,600 resident doctors in Germany. The earnings fluctuate from subject to subject. Ophthalmologists make the most money, neurologists and psychiatrists are the worst paid.

Those who generate more sales potentially have more money available to make investments. However, the expenses of ophthalmologists - the top earners among general practitioners - are only average. How high the income of resident specialists is and what percentage of sales are spent on material and laboratory work can be seen from the study of the cost structure of medical practices.

A General practitioners, who runs an individual practice earns an average of 319,000 euros per year. The expenditure is 46.1 percent. The largest item is personnel costs, which - depending on the size of the practice and income - are between 25 percent and 29.2 percent. The average net income for the general practitioner is 172,000 euros per year.

A Internist has an annual gross turnover of 418,000 euros. He spends exactly half of his sales on expenses, so that the net income of a resident internist at the end of the year is 209,000 euros.

Urologist have an identical annual income of 227,000 euros (net income). At 436,000 euros, the income is slightly lower than that of general practitioners. But the personnel costs are lower at 22.2 percent.

Owners of individual practices for neurology, psychiatry and psychotherapy, child psychiatry or psychosomatic medicine bear the red lantern in the earnings table. Here, 282,000 euros are generated per year. The expenses amount to 45 percent. The net income at the end of the year is 155,000 euros.

Every four years, the Federal Statistical Office provides facts on the merit of general practitioners. The numerical values ​​for some specialist areas such as radiology, anesthesiology or nuclear medicine are not certain enough to provide reliable information.
