He is a professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco and an expert in cognitive behavioral therapy, which includes dopamine fasting. For us, he explains how one can practice dopamine fasting 2.0, as he calls it, mindfully and healthily, without having to forego everything that feels good in life.
Dr. Sepah, what is dopamine fasting 2.0?
Dopamine Fasting 2.0 is a fact-based technique that helps people control their addictions and impulses. There are two techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy that have proven themselves in clinical practice.
What do these techniques look like?
The first technique is stimulus control. Affected people are advised to “fast” those behaviors that are problematic for them, such as social media consumption, for a certain period of time. One to four hours a night, a day on the weekend, a weekend quarterly or a week a year.
What should you watch out for?
It is important to plan your times, for example 5-15 minutes after each meal, to avoid overuse. The second technique is habit reversal training. The aim is to observe how urges arise and then decrease again - without getting involved. This weakens the impulsive behavior over time.
