Why is Silicon Valley incredibly productive

Dopamine fasting: what is the truth about the new trend from Silicon Valley?

Silicon Valley will probably never stop shocking us with new, sometimes crazy trends. This time, too, the tech nerds are doing something very unusual in order to perform even more productively, more efficiently and better at their work: They evade all stimuli because their brain can supposedly concentrate better this way. Talking, vacation or sex are not allowed, as these activities overstrain the brain and come at the expense of productivity.

Sounds a bit bizarre, doesn't it? So that you don't get cocky and join the trend right away, we have worked with Dr. Cameron Sepah spoken. He is a professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Francisco and an expert in cognitive behavioral therapy, which includes dopamine fasting. For us, he explains how one can practice dopamine fasting 2.0, as he calls it, mindfully and healthily, without having to forego everything that feels good in life.

Dr. Sepah, what is dopamine fasting 2.0?

Dopamine Fasting 2.0 is a fact-based technique that helps people control their addictions and impulses. There are two techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy that have proven themselves in clinical practice.

What do these techniques look like?

The first technique is stimulus control. Affected people are advised to “fast” those behaviors that are problematic for them, such as social media consumption, for a certain period of time. One to four hours a night, a day on the weekend, a weekend quarterly or a week a year.

What should you watch out for?

It is important to plan your times, for example 5-15 minutes after each meal, to avoid overuse. The second technique is habit reversal training. The aim is to observe how urges arise and then decrease again - without getting involved. This weakens the impulsive behavior over time.

Can Dopamine Fasting Help You Be More Motivated at Work? If yes how?

A huge amount of time is wasted at work. For many employees, only half a working day is often filled with productivity that can be demonstrated. Part of the reason for this is the incredible amount of distractions. In particular through smartphones and computers, which are common and necessary for work. Dopamine Fasting 2.0 helps people to control their impulses so that they are no longer easily distracted or tempted. This in turn creates more time to promote productivity.
