What is brick work steps
What You Need Regardless of what type of brickwork you are working on, the basic principles remain the same. Brick works that stand the test of time require patient approach and frequent testing should be employed to ensure that the bricks are laid in a straight line, horizontally and vertically.
What you need
Regardless of the type of Building block work You work, the basic principles stay the same. Brick works that stand the test of time require patient approach and frequent testing should be employed to ensure that the bricks are laid in a straight line, horizontally and vertically.
Step 1 - lay the foundations
The key to working with the stone is having a solid, level foundation. Higher structures require a deeper foundation. Pour concrete into the foundation and smooth it out to give your bricks the best possible hold. When you finish building, you will fill in the foundations and cover the concrete. Don't worry about it spoiling the look of your work.
Step 2 - preparation
Go over the plans for your project and lay out a dry row of bricks to make sure they fit. A simple first project is a planter with small walls or blocks. Place bricks and a few boards of mortar in easy-to-reach locations near your work area so you can work efficiently when you start.
Step 3 - mix mortar
For a small project, you can mix your mortar in a wheelbarrow or mortar box. Mix three parts sand to two parts masonry cement and add water until it's the consistency of pudding. Wet your mortar boards with water and place a couple of scoops of the mixture on top to keep it moist. Usually the mortar takes about an hour and a half before it gets too hard.
Step 4 - Place marker bricks
Start laying bricks at a corner point. Put a mortar in the position you need the first stone and lightly flatten it before laying. Use the level to make sure the stone is correct and make small adjustments by tapping it lightly with the trowel handle. Place another stone on the other end of the level to act as a marker so you can line up the other stones. Repeat this process for the length of your project so you have end tiles with a number of marks in between. Run a string from one end to the other and hold it in place with free bricks.
Step 5 - Complete the first course
Put the stones in the remainder of the first course. You'll need to glue mortar to the ends of the intermediate stones to bind them to their neighbors. There should be no need to check the level of the intermediate stones. You should be able to easily line them up with the markers. When you start laying the next course, offset it half a stone from the one below. This allows you to link curves for strength. Repeat the marker stone process on each level, and as the wall gets higher use the level to level the stones both vertically and horizontally. Fill in any gaps in the mortar in the layer below.
Step 6 - flapping joints
When the mortar is set far enough that you can touch it with your finger without making an impression, use a common firing pin to smooth out the mortar joint. Brush off any excess grout from the bricks.
