  4. Xiaomi: These smartphones receive security updates

Xiaomi always equips the more expensive devices of the Mi series with good technology. This means that these smartphones usually receive update support for two years. But you can also count on at least one Android update for the cheaper Redmi models.

At the subsidiary brand Poco, at least the models of the X and F series mostly receive an Android update.

MIUI 12.5: Xiaomi's new user interface at a glance

No normal Android is installed on Xiaomi smartphones, but its own user interface. The latest version is MIUI 12.5, which was presented with the Mi 11. MIUI 12.5 offers the Super Wallpapers, a 22 percent lower CPU load and a 15 percent lower energy requirement. With the new notes app you can write down your ideas faster. You should also be able to connect your cell phone to a laptop.

MIUI 12.5 global release schedule

Xiaomi has published the schedule for the distribution of the global MIUI 12.5 version. The rollout is scheduled to start in the 2nd quarter of 2021, and the Mi 10T, Mi 10T Pro, Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro and Mi 11 will be the first smartphones to receive the update. At the end of the 2nd quarter, the devices of the second wave will receive the update. These include the Mi 10 Lite 5G, Mi 10T Lite, Mi Note 10 and Note 10 Pro, Mi Note 10 Lite, Redmi Note 9T, Note 9 Pro, Note 9S, Note 9, Note 8 Pro, Redmi 9 as well as that Poco F2 Pro and the Poco X3 NFC.

MIUI 13: release date is already known

Although the rollout of MIUI 12.5 is still in full swing, Xiaomi is already presenting the next version in June: MIUI 13. Am 25th June the Chinese variant is to be presented. It is currently uncertain when and whether the global version of the user interface will appear.

There are now first details about the features of MIUI 13 as well as rumors about which devices could receive an update to MIUI 13.

The rollout of MIUI 12 is still ongoing

In parallel to MIUI 12.5, Xiaomi is still distributing the update to MIUI 12 for many devices. New in version 12 is the long-missing app drawer and dark mode. If the app drawer is activated, applications are stored in a kind of "drawer" and not directly on the home screen. This makes it appear much clearer. With the dark mode, the smartphone's energy consumption was already reduced under MIUI 11, in which the backgrounds of applications were displayed dark.

In version 12 you can also activate dark mode for third-party programs. An ultra-energy-saving mode helps you, if your battery should run out soon, to limit the power consumption of functions with high energy requirements. The network connection, incoming calls and messages are not affected.

The update to MIUI 12 gives you more control over your data. A notification in the status bar informs you when, for example, the camera, the location or the microphone are used in the background. Suspicious processes can be stopped by clicking on the notification. Access rights can be conveniently set for each application.

Mobile phones from the Xiaomi Mi A series are delivered without MIUI, instead Xiaomi relies on Android One.

That's how long you have to wait for Android updates on Xiaomi

So far, the Chinese manufacturer has taken a little more time before new Android versions were released. Last year, the period between the announcement of an update and the rollout for Xiaomi smartphones was greatly reduced, with users having to wait around two months for Android 10. Xiaomi was just as fast with Android 11.

An Android update is planned or available for these models

The following list includes all Android-based smartphones from Xiaomi that have been released in Germany since 2017. Models from the Xiaomi brands "Blackshark" and "Pocophone" are also listed here. If the Android version of a MIUI update has not yet been determined exactly for a model, we will list the MIUI version. If an error has crept in, let us know in the comments.

Xiaomi: These smartphones receive security updates

In addition to version updates, Xiaomi also distributes security patches. Most of these do not contain any new features, but close security gaps in the operating system. Google publishes a new security patch for Android every month. However, the manufacturers are not obliged to always distribute them.

Some manufacturers distribute the patches only quarterly, others monthly. For some manufacturers, the frequency of distribution depends on the model. Xiaomi does not provide an overview that shows which models receive a security update and how often. According to their own statements, however, older devices are also given a security patch.
