Summary

Creating a thriving, knowledge-based economy is a key goal of virtually every government. These policies are mostly based on the assumption that the knowledge economy is a revolutionary new phenomenon that began in the second half of the 20th century. The article questions this assumption and argues that knowledge has always been a defining element of economies. The question is therefore not whether an economy is knowledge-based, but how knowledge is introduced into the production process. This is where the digital transformation unfolds its force.
