Vacation 2021: Corona affects travel plans of every second person

Frankfurt am Main (ots)

After the 2020 holiday season was canceled for many due to the ongoing corona pandemic, Germany is looking forward to the 2021 travel season. The fact that Corona is still determining our vacation plans is confirmed by a new population-representative study [1] by the digital insurance manager CLARK in collaboration with YouGov: Any : The second respondent (49 percent) states that the pandemic will have a major impact on vacation planning in 2021. And although the travel-intensive summer season is still pending, 13 percent already state that they had to postpone or cancel a planned vacation in 2021 due to the corona pandemic. For everyone who is planning a trip despite the current situation, there are now a few points to consider.

Vacation in times of the pandemic: cover early

Anyone who decides to go on vacation in 2021 must be aware that travel cancellation and travel interruption insurance may not be effective. Since the WHO classified the coronavirus as a pandemic on March 11, 2020, many insurers no longer provide benefits and protection in this context. An official quarantine measure is also not covered by the insurance - just as not to travel out of fear of Covid-19.

However, there are also some insurers who have adjusted the scope of their travel cancellation and travel interruption insurances due to the corona pandemic and offer, for example, Covid-19 supplementary policies. "It is important to know exactly the benefits of your previous travel cancellation or travel interruption insurance right at the start of travel planning, or to get individual advice when you take out a new one," says Dr. Marco Adelt, COO and co-founder of CLARK.

Keep an eye on travel warnings

The Federal Foreign Office will issue travel warnings if necessary. Holidaymakers and those wishing to travel should always pay attention to this information, because when they start their trip to a listed country, they are left on their own if problems arise. The RKI regularly reviews the list of risk areas and adjusts it if necessary. A worldwide travel warning like in March 2020 should not be issued again for the time being.

"Some people believe that an official travel warning about Covid-19 is reason enough for the travel cancellation or travel interruption insurance to take effect. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Because the government's warnings are not a ban. Rather, they are appeals to the population To put health and life before one's own pleasure, "says Adelt. "The situation is different with border closings from holiday countries where the authorities refuse holidaymakers entry. Although there is no insurance here either, the tour operators generally bear the costs if you withdraw from the trip."

Corona suspected case on vacation: what now?

What is often forgotten in the sheer anticipation of the upcoming trip: German health insurance ends at the border. Anyone who goes abroad during a pandemic should therefore take out travel health insurance. Because despite having a European health insurance certificate, statutory health insurers cannot always guarantee that you will receive benefits abroad.

"Even with a foreign health insurance, the scope of benefits is of course limited," explains Adelt. "It does not work, for example, if travelers want to take a corona test as a precautionary measure while on vacation. There must be a specific suspicion of Covid infection, for example through a contact chain with a sick person. International travel insurance should also be taken out before the trip because it only applies to trips abroad that are in the future and have not yet been started. "

Ban on accommodation on home leave

The Prime Ministers and the Chancellery have repeatedly imposed regional bans on accommodation in the course of the corona pandemic. Courts overturned a number of these measures. Nationwide bans on overnight stays for tourists also remain legally controversial as long as there is no new law. If the anti-corona measures stand up to complaints from citizens, hostels and hotels will probably have to cancel their own overnight stays and holidaymakers will then be reimbursed for their payments. "There have never been such bans in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. Travelers should first talk to their tour operator. And even if they have taken out travel insurance, home tourists are dependent on the insurer being accommodating. In any case, it is worthwhile Here, too, a conversation with the personal insurance advisor, "concluded Adelt.
