Summary

Max Weber's preoccupation with the Chinese teachings of Confucianism and Taoism can be seen as an extension of his work on Protestantism (see Chapter II.34) from the years 1904 to 1906. Between 1909 and 1913, the year in which he presumably had completed a first draft of his China study, Weber apparently began to research more and more into the peculiarities of Western culture and to differentiate it from other cultures or world religions (Schluchter 1985, 528; MWG I / 19, 16). His basic question was the phenomenon of rationalization (see Chapter II.35), which only existed in Protestant-influenced countries. Criticism of this model presumably also led Weber to familiarize himself with the cultures of other world religions on the basis of the results of relatively young sciences such as Sinology.
